My Son has 1/2 scholarship to American University. Passion for History, Debate, on debate team in high school 4 years, government, and political science interest. He is not sure about field of study for the future.

Many are saying Cornell is the easy choice; But what about access to DC area, internships, School of International Service Honors Program ( diversity among students from different countries.) If he chooses a government filed of study maybe American is good?

Then we liked the diverse ILR program exposing our son to law, negotiation, management, labor, economics, business.

Any help with this decision would be greatly appreciated.

i’m biased because i go to cornell, but boyfriend is in ilr and he’s also been getting good internships and interacting with international students. internships in nyc come up often and there is a program called the urban semester in which your son can spend a semester in nyc doing mostly internships and shadowing while receiving credit. a lot of ILRies go into different fields. he will also have the option to internally transfer if he decides on a more solid career path, but many ILRies are happy (there is a government major, since you mentioned maybe studying government) and he can concentrate in certain areas within ILR. i’d take a look at some of those options.

Thanks for your thoughtful reply. Saw mixed reviews on American’s social scene or lack of.
Any more comments welcomed!
