cornell or william & mary?

I'm not so sure on which school to choose...
Right now, it's between Cornell and William&Mary in VA class of 2014
I got into the College of Human Ecology for Cornell

Any thoughts or opinions? Just want to know what other people think. I'm out of state (NJ)

Have you visited both campuses? Very different feel to them. I live near W & M and son is going to Cornell next year. Let me know if you have any specific questions.

no i haven’t visited either - i’m going next week to both though.
the most i know of the schools are from reviews online…
i was thinking of the academics and name value (just a little!)
how would you compare both schools’ reputations? and stress level in terms of schoolwork?
and the overall “vibe” - i mean with cornell it is what it is… i’ve heard a lot about it, know people that go there… is W&M more of a quirky kind of school?

Around here, W & M likes to call themselves a “southern Ivy”. I would definitely say that the academics are tough and a degree from there is well respected. The campus is very nice, Williamsburg is a great town, and there is a lot to do nearby. Weather is a definite plus. I will say it has a southern feel to it, if you want to call that quirky. I would not say it is a party school by any means. There are a fair amount of OOS students there, but it is a state school, so you will see mostly Virginians.
My personal feeling is that Cornell is higher on academics, reputation, and name value. I know that their standards for admitting students are higher as well. Cornell is much larger and has more options in case you decide to change your major. There are defintely lots of NY and NJ kids there too.
Hard to say about the stress. I think that is a personal thing. Some kids stress about everything, others don’t stress at all. After you check out both campuses, you should have a better idea which school is a good fit for you.

Cornell is much bigger and has ranked hockey program. Ithaca is beautiful in fall and spring but pretty tough winters. W&M more like Brown/Dartmouth in size and scope. Cheaper tuition. If you want to work in South after school, name recognition would be better than Cornell, even though C is known better nationally through Ivy halo effect. Weather is big W&M advantage. Ive been on both campuses in March. Snow and wind in NY. Sunny and 70s in VA.

Go visit both, you cant lose.

Cornell’s reputation is about half a tier to a tier above that of Willam and Mary. Both are good schools, but Cornell definitely has substantially better name recognition/reputation.

Overall, I’d say that Cornell has fairly demanding schoolwork and a “you’re free to do whatever you choose to do” feel to it. The college of human ecology, in particular, has a very friendly, social feel to it and the coursework is very manageable. So I wouldn’t worry too much if you’re in the college of human ecology.

When it comes to overall vibe, a lot of it comes down to YOU, not the college you attend. If you come to college looking to have a lot of fun and make friends, you’ll find that. If you’re looking for academic competition, you can find that. The college environment means different things to different people.

A few years ago, I was in a similiar spot, deciding between Cornell and another school that seemed to be a good fit. I ultimately decided on Cornell, primarily becaues it had a somewhat better reputation, which was my primary criterion.

Hope this helps,
-Dan

I just visited Cornell today and going to W&M this weekend
Visiting the campus just made the decision that much harder… haha

I appreciate your help everyone :)

I’m between William and Mary and Cornell as well. At this point I’m pretty sure I’ll choose Cornell, both for the in-state tuition at CALS and for the opportunities its size brings. I’m visiting W+M this weekend, too, and I also visited Cornell on Monday so I might have even seen you.

haha that’s so weird! yeah i might see you around on saturday
i still have to wait for financial aid from w&m… so i guess i can consider which school will leave me in more debt after 4 years lmao.

@ConnorB, what other factors did you consider between the two ?

I have yet to hear about financial aid from W+M too, so until I find out I can’t really make a fair judgment. Cornell’s aid was enough, though, that W+M’s would have to be incredible for me to swing back the other way towards going there. At this point, I would graduate from Cornell with zero student debt, and I can’t see myself turning that down.

Other factors are mostly small things. I have two friends that go to W+M, so that’s a plus there. I think Ithaca is a better location (as far as things to do) than Williamsburg. The weather is obviously much nicer in Williamsburg, but I don’t really mind the snow that much.

And yeah haha I probably will see you around on Saturday. It’s going to be my first time actually visiting W+M so I’m excited.

Ah the admitted students day was a lot of fun  I seriously would go to w&m, but strangely it is costing me more than cornell is and w&m is giving me almost 1/4 less financial aid than cornell. i think it’s because i’m out of state…

the campus and the people are really great though… feels like “home,” as cliche as that sounds. if it would cost me less, i’d go 100%.
