I’m guessing her dad would be you, oldfort?

No, I am the mom. I understood everything she said.

I am guessing that the sorority rush process is much more structured because there are only 11 houses and tons of girls rushing. If girls just showed up on their own accord to whatever house they wanted , it would be chaos.

No, sorority rush is better structured because it’s run by young women who are advised by adult women, whereas fraternity rush is conducted by latent-adolescent males who are advised by no one in particular.

the original question for this thread was “anyone pumped” and we got a little off topic so I will try to help re-focus by saying: yeah.

Haha def. psyched, still.

rush week is awesome, I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I did. I cant wait for rush week again !

im pumped yeah

sucks that rush week for girls doesnt seem like half the fun that the guys get to have
but i guess our pledging is supposed to much better, haha

I posted something similar to this on another thread but I think it is even more relevant here. So if anyone is wondering what rush week really is for guys:
In the beginning of the week there is an info session for rush in general, you get a map of the houses across campus and they explain the process. During the day on Tuesday, “smokers” start; these are daytime events where the houses host guys to come over, meet brothers, hang out, eat, and there are often some casual activities (video games, pool, etc.). At the smokers is where you can get invited to a nighttime rush event. Then at night there are rush events, which are not typical Cornell parties. These rush events mostly involve going fun places, drinking, or various activities.

Just to give you an idea of the type of night events, some of the most memorable/fun stuff from rush that I remember hearing about or taking part in:
-Fiji had afroman come play in their house, which was cool.
-SAE had a formal type thing with dates.
-Psi U had girls dancing on tables with sake bombing.
-Pike had an event called “Bounce” which was amazing.
-TEP had a thing with lots of smoking.
-Many houses did beer pong tournaments.
-Other houses rent out bars in the area and bring everyone there to drink for free.

Most houses host several night events throughout rush week. It is important to make sure you attend the smokers and night events of houses that you want to join.

so from a parents perspective and in regards to meal plans etc…

If my daughter accepts a bid from a sorority, she will need to plan to eat meals there in the spring? or she won’t be eating meals there until fall 2010?

As you can see, I’m a little confused. I was thinking rush in spring was for them to join in the fall. or maybe that is just the first chance they actually have to go live in the house.

Your daughter won’t live in the house until next Fall. If she were to join a sorority, she may have few meals there, but she’ll be very busy for a month with less chance to eat at the cafeteria. My daughter dropped down to minimum meal plan with more red bucks. There will be social dues for spring (I think it’s $500-700+ depending on the house), and you’ll be billed through bursar.

keep your meal plan. I ate a few fewer meals in the dining hall my sorority pledge semester but in general had dinner there. I never had lunch at all you can eat places to begin with.

i have a few questions about cornell rush…i’m currently a sophomore (and not a transfer), would that be looked down upon during rush? and also do you know how many girls have signed up for recruitment (is it higher or lower than previous years?)

^no you wont be at a disadvantage

it gets higher basically every year. i think around 800 are participating this year. if you stick through with recruitment and are smart with your choices, giving every chapter a chance, you are pretty much guaranteed a bid

how important is the “Meet the Greeks” event on monday after the 7pm meeting? i’m def going to go because frats will be there but like how many people from each go, is it just like 1 person? any connections of course will count but obviously contacts would be better as there are more frat brothers there.

to respond to cugirl, you won’t be at a disadvantage, lots of girls rush as sophomores, and pretty much every sorority will take sophs (though some might take more than others). that being said, i’d like to clarify what cuambassador said, because girls seem to always have this false notion in their head during rush. you are in no way guaranteed a bid if you sign up for recruitment. if you take her advice and go in with an open mind, you have a much BETTER chance at getting a bid than girls that don’t go in with an open mind, but it can’t be guaranteed

i agree with collegebound. i would also like to know more about that

i feel like meet the greeks will just be like clubfest kinda, where they will just table and talk to you, but they probably wont remember you.

I had a question if someone could answer it:

Can someone enlighten me on the finances of rushing/joining a fraternity? What dues are you expected to pay this spring if you do pledge? Starting next year, would you say a fraternity is cheaper or more expensive or about the same as living on west campus? Are there any other fees/dues we should know about?
