Cornell School of Arts & Sciences: are any courses mandatory,or do undergrads have complete freedom?

<p>After trying to find the answer online, I'm not sure what to believe. Does anyone know the answer to this?</p>

<p>There are distribution and breadth requirements, but the way in which you fulfill them is completely up to you. For example, you have to take a foreign language. You can complete this requirement either by proving you are completely fluent in another language (i.e. you come from a high school taught in another language), placing into a 2000-level course and taking a single semester, or taking a three semester sequence of a new language.</p>

<p>You also have to take either 2 math and 2 science course or 1 math and 3 science courses. Any number of courses will count as math or science so even if you are not incredibly proficient in either, there are classes you can take that you will still find interesting and not impossible.</p>

<p>Then there are a few other requirements you need to fill, such as taking a course in cultural analysis or in historical analysis. Again, there are dozens if not hundreds of courses that will fulfill these requirements.</p>

<p>To answer your question simply, no, there is no single course that all CAS students must take. There are specific courses that may be required of your major, but not throughout CAS. You can essentially develop and plan your own schedule.</p>
