I am writing my essay for CAS and i am sort of stuck on intellectual interests.
i had a summer lab position and would that potentially count as an intellectual interest?
Also, what about chess? I know it has been established as an ii but I am applying for biology and i am not sure if thats the best thing to put in as an interest.

Also, what kinds of other stuff count as interests? Most of my ECs revolve around Community Service (over 1000 hours in the past 4 years) and Lab work so im not sure what else i can do.

Chess should work. Especially if you are in a Chess organization.
Music? Art? Tutoring? Sports? Debate/Speech? Different types of volunteer hours definitely would be a strong point.
I wouldn’t try to fluff if though, I’d imagine that you should have enough content for an essay with the 1000 community service hours alone.

Thank you so much for the reply.
Only thing is, chess is more of a hobby althought I do teach it at a senior centre. Most of my awards are from grade 3 :$…
I also do art lessons since i was 5 but nothing notabble, I play piano and the saxophone (piano RCM grade 8 Honors with Distinction, and saxophone in grade 9 school band and jazz band), I do Taewkondo and I had a part time job at Kumon teaching math and reading.

Only problem is, tkd and volunteering isnt really intellectual and the rest, I dont have anything notable to say about it, especially justifiying why these affect me going into bio

I don’t think you really need a notable intellectual interest. I wrote about physics and cosmology, and I was accepted ED. I focused on how Cornell was the right place to pursue my interests.

The supplements are really the best indicators of how interested you are in the university and how much of a fit you are for the particular college. I applied to Arts and Sciences and wrote about my experiences in a science internship and my general love of science. In addition, I mentioned how I acquired a musical curiosity in high school and desired to go to CAS so I could pursue many diverse fields of study without risk. I applied as a Chem major and wrote about music- that goes to say how you can really write about anything, like chess, as long as it makes you look like a good fit for your primary college.
