Cornell Transfers for Fall 2009 - Decisions and Stats.

Current school & year: Top 50 LAC, Freshmen
Applying to: CAS (physics)
Current College GPA: 3.93 (18 credits)
Final HS GPA: 3.77 (10 5’s and 1 4 on my APs though…)
SAT/ACT/SAT II scores: 770 M (retaken in college after initial 670), 800 CR, 720 W (both the same on both sittings…)
Interview: N/A

Relative strength of essays (topics, if you are accepted and wish to share particularly strong approaches): Talked about how I was dissatisfied with my major program at my current school. Went into detail about ho Cornell had better physics in teaching and especially research and mentioned specific programs I’d like to be a part of. Finally I excused myself from not applying to research universities because I initially intended to major in philosophy.

College Extracurriculars: Nationally Competitive Debater, also in a bunch of clubs
HS Extracurriculars: Star Debater/captain, Eagle Scout, some minor physics competitions and a bunch of clubs.

Reasons for transfer, as conveyed by the essays: Desire to do meaningful research while an undergraduate. Need for more challenge in physics.
Hooks - applications strengths and weaknesses: No real hooks. I presented myself as a student who changed majors and needed to move to thrive in my new field. I did relate debate to physics by presenting it as an act in logical analysis.

Current school & year: Monmouth University FResh
Applying to: HumEc-PAM
Current College GPA: 3.72
Final HS GPA: idk b/c graduated 1 yr early
SAT/ACT/SAT II scores: 1360

Interview: N/A

Relative strength of essays: Wrote about my experience during the Multicultural Visititation Prgrm & family life. Enclosed pics with my essays, & quoted Ezra (I know my nose is really brown!!)
Relative strengths of recommendations: 1 from Dean, 1 Academic advisor, and 1 from professor. Very personal

College Extracurriculars: Senator in SGA, vol w/homeless, teach handicapped horse back riding, vol urban reading programs
HS Extracurriculars:Student Council, Math League, Science, etc… teach handicapped riding.
Summer jobs/activities: Teach handicapped riding

Reasons for transfer, as conveyed by the essays: My current college does not offer a decent pre-med or hosp admin prgm.
Hooks - applications strengths and weaknesses: Made my essay very personal. I tried to write from the heart, not sound rehearsed.

Any other info/comments: I wish everyone the very best of luck!!! When I attended Multicultural Visitation Prgm, we were told that Cornell wants original students with evident passion and ambition. We were told to truly show who we were in the essay, not what an admissions office wants us to be.

I know that I’m not supposed to write comments, but…
PERSONGUY, YOU ARE A GENIUS!!! Ok, that’s it!! My time is done!!

REJECTED

Current school & year: The University of Tennessee, Knoxville honors program
Applying to: (School at Cornell): CAS Economics (switched from CALS AEM 2 weeks ago)
Current College GPA: 3.92 w/15credits. currently taking 19creds 4 A’s 1 A- on midterm
10hrs of honors courses, some upper level courses
Final HS GPA: 3.3~ perfect freshman year–>very weak senior year
a bunch of honors and AP. i slacked with grades but not with schedule strength
SAT/ACT/SAT II scores: 34

Relative strength of essays: Bashed my current school quite a bit but portrayed my desire for a more intellectual environment. Was suspend for a day senior year in HS, so I wrote a satirical portrayal of the instance as an explanation was required on common app. Had to rewrite academic interest essay from AEM CALS to CAS econ, but i talked about how my interests havent changed I just found CAS to suit me better. Then yesterday I found a new major in CAS (CAPS) that I liked so i wrote an essay describing my interest in that.

Relative strengths of recommendations: Should have been good. One from my Chinese teacher who loves me, one from my honors english teacher who thinks im a great writer, and one from the lawyer i interned with and worked for and have known for years.

College Extracurriculars: omicron delta epsilon (honors econ society), econ club, honors current events table, honors discussion board, students promoting environmental action in knoxville, students in free enterprise, chinese language table, community service club, violin, tennis

HS Extracurriculars:varsity tennis, competitive junior tennis for 8 years. pretty much the only thing i mentioned was tennis as i stressed my lack of focus in my past few years in hs, although i was in a few clubs and did have some decent ec’s i didnt think they would be relevant.
Summer jobs/activities:internship as a paralegal at a law firm 2nd sem senior year, paid intern the summer after and the firms only paralegal for 2 weeks

Reasons for transfer, as conveyed by the essays: i said i matured alot this past year and now want a more intellectually stimulating environment. i also talked about UT’s weak asian program and Cornell’s strong one. Found the China and Asia Pacific major yesterday which really interests me. Also, cornells diversity and range of course offerings interest me cause my interests are interdisciplinary.

Hooks - applications strengths and weaknesses: my brother is an alum but i dont think that helps at all. weakness was definitely my weak HS and my change from AEM to econ and then again talking about another major that interested me.

Any other info/comments: i knew my chances, but the reality is devastating

REJECTED
this is the second time i’m applying as a transfer and this is my second rejection from cornell. i’ve decided to post my stats but i’ll keep certain names and info out since i don’t really want people to accidentally guess who i am. sorry guys but feel free to pm me!

Current school & year: 3rd year at a CCC
Applying to: (School at Cornell) AAP architecture
Current College GPA: 3.88
Final HS GPA: N/A, HS abroad
SAT/ACT/SAT II scores: 2030 (i took the SAT in college and that was my first and only time)

Interview: (if required, did it go well?) required. i thought it went pretty well. i went to an alumni (architect)'s office and he seemed to really liked me. the whole interview was about 45min and we talked about my major, my interests, things that influenced me, my home country, architecture, etc etc.

Relative strength of essays: i wrote about why i chose my major and what drove me to this decision. i wrote about things that i’ve done and how they’ve influenced me. i thought my essay was very strong (i can write pretty well) and passionate.

Relative strengths of recommendations: i have 3 recommendations from various professors from my major classes and i have read them and i thought they were quite good. yet perhaps this is the weaker part of my recommendation because i have nothing like “this is the best student i’ve had for 10 years” or so. they only talked about how good a student i was and what i did in their classes and so on.

College Extracurriculars: founder of a club in my CCC, school representative for various external events
HS Extracurriculars: super active volunteer, participated in both sports and academic activities (inside and outside school), won lots of awards
Summer jobs/activities: internship at a well-established engineering firm last summer, worked in various other organizations including a lot of libraries (lol)

Reasons for transfer, as conveyed by the essays: i talked about what i like about cornell’s architecture program from my months of research and how i’m very ready for it.

Hooks - applications strengths and weaknesses: again, i think that my recommendations were the weaker parts since i was pretty confident about my essays. we were asked to submit portfolios as well and i thought i had a really nice portfolio (my professors were very amazed by my portfolio). but i guess since cornell only takes in about 7% of the transfer applicants for AAP, those who are fortunate enough to get in must have super super super good everything, and i mean every single thing in the application package.

Any other info/comments: make sure your application is as strong as possible. find as many internships as you can. take as many related classes as possible and keep your GPA as close to 4.0 as you can. basically you just cannot have any flaws in your application and no weak spots. good luck to you all!

HS Extracurriculars: couple clubs
Summer jobs/activities: CVS Pharmacy certified technician. I work about 30 hours and I go to school so I also included that on the common application.

CAS is very hard to get into and its obvious that alot of people applying have advantages over others, either they are international or they know someone who works at Cornell, many people use the fact that they are from a different country to their advantage. The admissions process is somewhat discriminatory. Noone of us have a chance of getting in if there are hundreds of people from other countries applying.
