Cornell vs. Chicago vs. Middlebury

Hey guys I am relatively new here but I know some of you have done a lot of college research. I never knew making a choice would be that difficult. I am planning to major in mathematics and was accepted to these three schools. Academics is a priority for me, but I also concider social life. Can I please get some feedback?

Chicago has the best math dept., I believe

chicago also probably has the worst social life

Is the social life really that bad? I mean I am russian and I went to a public high school in brooklyn, so I'll die without decent social life...and how far is chicago from the city? is it like NYU? does it have a campus?

Chicago has a really nice campus. It is on the south side of Chicago- about a 15 minute train ride to "downtown". The social life is NOT that bad. It isn't a big state u, but there is plenty to do and lots of cultural offerings. Your schools are all quite different. Cornell has a great college town, but it is not near a major city. There is lots to do, though, and the area is beautiful. It is a large school.

I have just learned that I have been accepted to Amherst College. I know it's ranked number 2 in the nation amon colleges. still, is chicago better?

i would definitely go to Amherst over Chicago

Amherstis a part of the 5-college consortium which is pretty cool.

As a fellow Russian and someone who has done gigantic amounts of extensive research on colleges, I'd say go to Amherst. Academics are top notch, you'll get great connections and the social scene will be great. Chicago has a reputation of being quite 'nerdy' and proud of it's intellectualism, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but the weather there sucks. Winters can get as cold as they are in Russia.

Chicago weather is nice. There is nothing better than Chicago in the fall.

Thanks Pavel, I will visit both campuses but your advice is great

Is there anything negative u can tell me about either school?

All great schools. You can't go wrong with any of them. Chicago is awesome, Cornell is Ivy and Middlebury is a great liberal arts school. I would probably go with Chicago or Cornell because of their reps. You need to research which one is better in Mathematics because I don't know. Reps of both are great.

Well, I really need professional advice academic-wise both in terms of math department and overall academics

Cornell or Amherst. Come on, the guy's from Brooklyn and you now want to put him in the South Side of Chicago? Hasn't he suffered enough?

I would say Chicago or Cornell. Chicago is ranked 5th by the Gourman Report for undergrad math, Cornell is ranked 13th. The Gourman Report tends to overlook LACs, so Middlebury and Amherst are rarely mentioned in the Gourman Report. However, Amherst and Middlebury are not mentioned in Rugg's Recommendations for math, and Rugg's tends to emphasize LACs.

Chicago awards about 50 bachelors degrees in math each year, Cornell awards about 30, Middlebury awards about 10, and Amherst awards about 5.

I don't think Amherst and Middlebury are known for math but they are great schools and I don't think it would be a mistake to attend either one for math. However, Chicago is the best for math.

Middlebury.

pick either Chicago or Cornell.

i've heard alot of bad stuff about the social scene at chicago (re-enforced by a few friends who go there) but if you absolutely need a city location to survive, Chicago would be best.

The social scene at Cornell is fantastic, but it's not located in a huge city.

I would go with Cornell, in my opinion, as amazing as Chicago is, it doesn't make up for "Where fun goes to die."
