Cornell vs. CWRU vs. UCLA

flopsy: I was accepted to CHemical Engineering w/ bioengineering option. "I wasn't good enough for bioengineering" was basically what the letter said.:)

zagat: I got a likely letter from Cornell. I haven't visited none of the colleges I got into yet, but I will during April.

AHHH too difficult to choose..
22K grant(Case) and 22k loan(UCSD + hopefully, similar or less for Cornell)...

I got into Case too with a nice scholarship. The reason why they give nice scholarships to many people is because no one wants to live in the poorest city in the nation. Cleveland SUCKS ASS. There are some decent parts, but Case is in the middle of the ghetto of the town for some odd reason. There is nothing to see except the Rock Hall of Fame, and that's once for like an hour. Then you're ****ed for anything fun for the rest of your undergraduate life. Sound like fun?

I think if you visit, you'll end up at Cornell. It's beautiful and has great resources. And as you say, you're Asian, your parents will have 4 very happy years speaking of their son away at an ivy..........Good luck in your choice, they're all good.

Hey parasitlin--did you really visit CWRU or just hear stuff about it? I went this summer and it's in a nice part of Clevaland--the whole street is lines with museums and the conservatory. There's a big park on one side. Little Italy is just a few blcoks a way--cobblestone streets with dozens of restaurants.

People were friendly and there seemed to be a good variety of activities. Cleveland gets a lot of good concerts--lots of venues from small to large.

Cornell is absolutely beautiful and LA is LA but people shouldn't rule out Case.

Yes I did visit it. The campus itself is nice, but the surrounding city is a DUMP. I didn't visit Little Italy but I did visit the other surrounding areas and suffice it to say, those are bad enough to deter me from going there.

parasitelin - I have seen your post on the Case thread and I think your opinion is not very fair. Case is in a wonderful area. There is certainly more here than just the Rock Hall of Fame (see the Case posts on the Case thread). With so many other people bummed out because they didn't get admitted and/or didn't receive a scholarship it's too bad that they wasted it on you. Why did you even apply? I am sorry this sounds so harsh, but I am sick & tired about you & a few other people always saying there is nothing to do here or that Case is in the ghetto or that Cleveland sucks. Maybe if you spent more time looking to see what else there is to do in Cleveland instead of complaining you would have found out what Cleveland has to offer.

I've heard a lot of negative AND positive comments on Case...I guess the best way to visit the campus...
Thank you for the advice, all of u!

More suggestions are welcome, too...:)

What is so exciting to do in Ithaca compared to Cleveland? I like Ithaca, but the general area is also run-down and I don't see there being anything more exciting going on there than Cleveland.

If Cornell offers u a similar package, I'd say Cornell (but make sure you visit first, it'll help you make up your mind). I believe Cornell hosts its Cornell Days during the middle of April.

Otherwise, UCLA's the easy choice out of the three.

The comments made about Case's social life are VERY unfair. I am very seriously considering attending next year and I have three good friends their this year. I stayed on campus for seven days this year (five days in February, two this last week) and I never once was bored. I never once was near or saw or heard of alcohol or drugs. I never once felt unsafe. There was plenty to do-- eat in Little Italy or down at Coventry, major league sports, several museums and the Cleveland Orchestra essentially on campus, major concert venues and comedy venues in Cleveland (House of Blues whcih attracts many class "a" acts and The Improv for comedy, same deal). The campus was very nice and although there is snow and cold, if you don't know that when you apply you probably shouldn't get in. Academics at most top 50 schools are going to be somewhat prioritized, but I didnt feel by any stretch that the campus or Cleveland was a boring place.

I am sorry that JonMitz hasn't found it a pleasant experience but it seemed like a pretty great place to me. Plus, with the North Residential Village opening (it looks incredible), I am not sure I'd want to leave my dorm.

Like many other places, I think you have to make of it what you will.

Is the Cleveland Orchestra still reputed to be among the best in the world?

Yeah, at some schools you can go to big time football and basketball games every week. At Case, you can see the Orchestra on a regular basis with low cost student discounts. Of course, thats not of interest to everyone but it is for some people.

I was reading the Case course catalog. The music department offers a 2 semester undergraduate class in Conducting. As part of the course, you attend rehearsals of the Cleveland Orchestra and take notes about what the conductor is doing. For a Music Ed major, this would be equivalent to a EE getting an internship at Intel - and its right on the campus. I also heard Case students can get jobs at Severance Hall. I don't think there are many places offering such an opportunity anywhere.

I find the Cornell finaid package kind of weird. If your parents make $50,000 a year and they're asking for $40K from your parents, then they're expecting your family to live on $10K a year?
