Cornell vs Duke

Need help deciding between the school without mentioning the weather

What do you want to study?
Is there a meaningful cost differential between the schools for you? (if so, is it a factor)
Do you think you will eventually want to settle in the South?
Do you think you will eventually want to settle in the East?
Have you visited both campuses – which do you prefer?

As a general rule, these are peer institutions, meaning that really is no overall compelling argument to go to either over the other, unless your field of study coincides with an area in which one is relatively strong and the other is relatively weak. There is no wrong choice here.

A lot of Duke graduates work in the NE, and its reputation is recognized globally, so I don’t think where you want to settle down should be impacted by your choice. My kid chose Cornell over Duke because of the location, pure and simple. She preferred NE to South.

Yes, have you visited both campuses? If so, which one did you feel more comfortable with? What about distance from your home?

What school in Cornell/ What do you want to study? There are some academic differences in different fields of study that could sway one. I’ve heard that on the whole, Cornell is a more competitive school and, if I’m going for pre-med for example, Duke would be a much better environment. At the same time though, if you’re going for Engineering, Cornell’s engineering school is one of the best not to say Duke is any worse. So it depends barring other factors like weather, how you like the students/campus, etc.

btw, Duke is known for being like more of a NE school though it is in the south so I don’t think that’s an issue.

Duke is ranked higher.

^ That all depends on what ranking you are referring to–
The most recent ARWU ranking of world universities has Cornell well above Duke.

ARWU for universities solely in the United States:
Cornell = #11
Duke = #27

[Academic Ranking of World Universities - ARWU](http://www.shanghairanking.com/ARWU2011.html)

ARWU is complete garbage.

A medical school like Mayo Medical School gets on the same list as comprehensive universities. We all know that CC does not subscribe to a list where Brown is ranked 65th.

Anyways back to the point, Duke and Cornell are peer schools.

^ All methodologies for ranking universities have their unique flaws – including USNWR. ARWU’s main shortcoming is an over-emphasis on research prowess. My intended point was really contained in your last sentence:

Cornell has a higher USNWR peer assessment score.

Really, these type of differences are minimal.

Duke has a tremendous alumni network-big plus for internships and job placement.

^ Cornell, likewise, has a phenomenal alumni network that happens to be larger than Duke’s.

@ OP

Carltonb17, in my opinion you should visit both campus’s (if you haven’t already), check out the respective program under consideration, and then go with the one that seems to fit best for you.

I highly suggest disregarding par72 and noobcake posts as basically everything that they’ve said is stupid.
