CORNELL VS GEORGETOWN VS PITT HONORS VS LAFAYETTE

Hello,

My Discussion Title is crazy, but we are finalizing our choices in the next week or so. My DS was accepted to 8 colleges, however these colleges offered the best financial packages. And, they are quite different.

So I am just throwing this out there to see what experiences others have had. Our only small concern is regarding Cornell, and its possible suburban feel. But Ithaca and Easton (Lafayette - in our home town) are about the same size city wise.

Initially, my DS is interested in a medical career…

Coming down to the end,

Thanks…

if you live in Easton, although I have a great opinion of Lafayette, it’s prob time to get away a little.
Cornell and Georgetown are relatively equal in terms of prestige and academic strength. Really comes down to whether you want the beautiful campus with outdoor recreation or prefer the small campus with amazing urban perks.

I love Pitt and think it’s a very underrated school. But I don’t think the honors program changes the experience enough to be a big factor. Now if Pitt will be a lot cheaper for you, then I have no problem choosing it over the more prestigious T25 places. It will get you where you want to go in the medical fields.

Yes, the Lafayette option downside was that it was local… a bit too local. But such a nice school , and he received a great scholarship.

My cost is as follows: Lafayette - 36k
Cornell - 29K
Georgetown - 35k
Pitt HC - 25K

Great points in your reply. Thank you.

Cornell looks like a fantastic deal! Congratulations on your sons hard work and getting such great opportunities.

My vote is Cornell. Lafayette is a great school (we live nearby as well), but I wouldn’t pay more for it in my hometown than any of the others. It’s also much smaller.

Cornell is by far the best choice, an Ivy League education at that price can not be beat.

Congratulations on the acceptances.

Are the net costs for each school affordable, without taking out more than the $5,500 student loan?

What major(s) are under consideration?

For pre-med I would give Pitt serious consideration. I would be concerned about Cornell’s level of competition and grade distribution in the pre-med required courses, as well as a relatively more cutthroat culture.

Affordable? Well, relatively… I have heard great things about Pitt too, which was why he applied. We also live in PA, so it was the most economical… I do read that many “pre-med” programs do not truly prepare you to take the MCAT. Cornell and Georgetown(they have an early assurance program) seem to do quite well with the “pre-med track preparation”… but we are still learning…

where did she end up going and why? congrats on all of the great admissions.
