Cornell vs NYU (CAS)

Intended major, Economics/math

Pros Cornell
- Ivy league
- Location
- errr... thats it?

Cons
- err... not sure

NYU
Pros
- I hear the economics department is great for NYU (CAS students CAN major in Eco/maths right? its not just open to stern students right?)
- Wall st in your backyard

Cons
- Not as prestigious as cornell (emphasise on "not as". your average neighbour would think cornell is more "prestigious")
- I'm not a fan of "no campus"
- also not so fond of NYC

i don't go to nyu, but my roommate and a few close friends do. they think it's no good for how much they pay. the dorms aren't as safe as they should be, very homogeneous student body, etc. i think cornell is a better school, nyu is all hype from smart rich kids who want to go to a "cool" school in the city. and if you don't like nyc, you won't like nyu-- it's right in the heart of everything downtown, as are most of the dorms.

well, if u dont like nyc, then u probably would not like nyu. However, I made a similar decision between cornell and nyu and i chose nyu. i did NOT like cornell's location because it is in the middle of nowhere. also, cornell has a high suicide rate...random fact. but I dont think that cornell is necessarily that much more prestigious than nyu. nyu is getting very selective and cornell is seen as the "Easy" way to go to an ivy. i would choose nyu, and DID, but u might be different.

homogenous? nyu is one of the most diverse student bodies in the country

its in the safest district in the city.

But aside from those misrepresentations... if you dont like NYC you wont like NYU, but there program is much better than Cornells, and recruiters/grad schools know this even if the freinds you are trying to impress dont.

Judging from what you've stated, NYU isn't for you if you don't like NYC.

That being said: NYU is not "all hype from smart rich kids who want to go to a "cool" school in the city." That is absolutely false and should be disregarded. Coming from someone who doesn't attend the school, there is no way NYU's strengths as a university can be judged.

good argument.
I second that

if you dont like nyc then definitely dont go to nyu

Well I dont MIND NYC.. but I've grown up in a city all my life so I would like something different.

I think I've made up my mind to go to NYU... Thanks all~

where are u from?

Well I've lived in Seoul for the first half of my life then Melbourne for my other half of my life.

I asked on the Cornell board and even they admitted that the Economics/Math departments are ranked very highly, so that's made my choice ^_^.

oh wow seoul and melbourne... pretty awesome

NYU no question. I'm going to be an econ. and math major in CAS as well. I picked NYU over Cornell and Brown. It was mostly between NYU and Brown, since Cornell impressed me the least. Both econ. and math at NYU are highly regarded departments so I think you'll be okay.

ok thanks ABirch~ That's sealed my decision ^_^

wait...werent decisions already due???

waitlist ^_^

waitlist for which one?

i was waitlisted at cornell
