Hi guys - looking for some advice here. I was admitted to Cornell University (School of Hotel Administration,) University of Southern California Marshall School of Business (I was admitted as a Sping Admit,) and the University of Michigan Ross School of Business (Pre-Admit.) I am completely torn and would love to hear pros/cons of each program.
I plan to work in Investment Banking upon graduation, preferably in NYC.
Ross is really good at placing graduates in wall street and new york city. its like ranked #3 in the country for wall street placement. I would recommend ross for sure because it has a very big presence in nyc and its definitely a business powerhouse and stronger than cornell and usc in nyc.
If you want NYC investment banking or finance DO NOT go to USC. It is a great school, but there is minimal/almost no recruiting for the East Coast. There are lots of opportunities for great jobs in LA, but if thats not your goal. do not choose USC. Ross prepares its students, and the recruiting for NYC is excellent.
I beg to differ. We have a friend whose S was at USC Marshall and Viterbi engineering. He was courted by many and he and several others from Marshall were flown to NYC for interviews and tours by the firms who DID recruit st USC. He had full tuition scholarship and got engineering degree, finance degree and MBA in 4 years and a few summers.
I’d compare the net out of pocket costs to you and your family of the programs. Congrats on your excellent options.
Hlmom, USC is not a target school for major Wall Street firms. That is not to say that they do not recruit Marshall students, but they recruit more aggressively at Ross.
fwiw, this is Wall Street Oasis ranking of top feeder schools (based on self-reporting of readers). It pretty much matches what is “common wisdom” out there. After Penn + NYU, Ross is 3, Cornell 6, USC 26 (based on getting interviews). That said, as the author notes, competition for those interviews is most intense at the top schools as the top kids looking to get to WS go to the schools that get the most kids in at WS, etc. etc… I’d say all 3 are pretty great choices, depending on where you want to spend 4 years and what else you might want to do beside Wall Street, but Ross and Cornell are safer is you’re sure you want to stuff yourself into south Manhattan…
OP likely already chose and committed, but assuming no major financial differences, Ross is the obvious choice. USC is pretty good for finance, but Ross is better. Also, you are a spring admit instead of a normal admit at USC, giving Ross yet another leg-up. Cornell’s Hotel Admin school is unlikely to be taken seriously by most people in IB.
