While heartbreaking to many, I think they did the right thing by letting people know they will not be accepting them as they are no longer in limbo and can move on. There is no reason for any school to keep thousands on their waitlists at this point.
Schools don’t generally rank waitlists. When they have an open spot at this juncture, they want to fill it with someone that meets the ratio of the class that they’re looking for. So, if it’s an OOS male with x characteristics that a spot opens up for, that’s most likely what they’re going to look for. Some schools are more transparent with exactly how this process works and the “piles” they have and others are not. Kudos at least to Cornell for at least cutting down the waitlist.
Most schools are already starting with their orientation processes, which are usually paid, Cornell’s isn’t until right before school starts and is “free” so that have that luxury. However, housing assignments are usually released in June, and freshmen register in July, so it now may just be a case of them determining what they have available as far as housing and seats in classes to determine if any colleges can let anyone else in or not.
Good luck to all, but again I would really move on to where you have committed and go with that and if something changes then you have that option.
UVA for instance IIRC. My son was accepted during EA, but when their RD decisions came out they either sent an email or made a lengthy post about how their waitlist is done and how buckets are made, in state vs OOS, etc. with how many there are, how many deferred were accepted and how many were waitlisted or rejected, etc. But then again, they’re one of the most transparent schools I have ever seen.
GA Tech has been someone transparent in stating their numbers on the WL, and how many they’ve let in and if they’re OOS or in state, and I can’t recall if they’re the ones that also said something about closing to OOS for certain majors or in state or something like that, but I know one school did.
Michigan hasn’t let anyone off the waitlist that we’ve heard, hasn’t given any numbers, other than telling Ross applicants that their waitlist is closed and I think Kinesiology waitlisters how many are on the waitlist and that they don’t expect to open it for anyone but are trying to do some sort of spring admit for a small cohort although it sounds very restrictive.
Thanks! It is very nice that UVA is so transparent. If only more schools could give applicants a little more information about how they are deciding on waitlist applicants. I think that it would help students to move on, especially, if they indicate that they don’t need more of certain majors. Imho, it also could make this process feel less personal.
I know I shouldn’t keep my hope too high or sound desperate but would it be possible if CoE contacts people they wanna admit tomorrow so there’s a weekend to decide? Just guessing.
I agree. It was something that after having 4 kids go through this process it was really refreshing and impressive to see. It’s not the school he ultimately chose, but it was in his final 2 and it honestly was one of the reasons it put them right up there. They were transparent about every thing from day 1.
