hi guys
do any of you guys know if Cornell's theater program is good? i mean if course, cornell is a prestigious school, but compared to other schools that offer theater programs. i am interested in television/media/theater production..nothing to do with acting or anything like that.
also, if you guys know any other schools that offer great production programs, please let me know!

There have been cuts in the theater department in the last couple years, I understand; you should look into it.

I don’ think Cornell’s theatre program is top notch. Yale’s is usually considered the best for straight theatre, but perhaps NYU would be a school to consider for your particular interests. A number in southern California also cater to that particular industry.

Actually I think it was considered pretty decent in recent times.

Here is a relevant link from someone who investigated:

But I just don’t know that this remains the case currently.

You can’t compare a program within a liberal arts college to BFA programs such as NYU offers. At the outset someone interested in theater has to decide whether to go the pre-professionally oriented BFA route, such as at NYU, or do a theater major/ concentration while getting a liberal arts degree, such as at Cornell, and then maybe get an MFA afterwards.

CC’s Theater/Drama majors subforum may be a useful resource.

Have you looked at Newhouse at Syracuse University, or the Park School at Ithaca College? My brother graduated from Ithaca College about six years ago (he didn’t get in at Newhouse) and has done really well. He studied television production/graphics, and now works for one of the networks in Boston. He also does a lot of freelance work, making videos for schools and businesses.

I didn’t mean to imply it’s a bad program. It’s gone up and down over the years, but it’s never been in the premier status because of the reason you mentioned. Then again, you can get great theatre experience at any level school just by doing productions - and oftentimes you can do better at less competitive schools because you get more experience and spend less time watch other people getting experience.

I don’t think theatre is what this individual seeks, though.

Hey guys thanks for all the replies! Yes im aware cornell isnt known for its theater school…though its a great school lol. Im interested mainly interested in media production…is there a major i can pursue at cornell for that?
