We are in list building mode. I have not visited these schools, so I am not an expert, but these may be questions to ask. I believe Northern IL is Meisner only. My S and I have discussed that point while list building, and he just doesn’t know enough about Meisner to know if its a good fit for him. With Marymount, I read an old post here on CC that mentioned the cafeteria closes on weekends, and the author ended up spending more money to cover restaurant meals, it stuck with me that I’d never think to ask about cafeteria availability, and added that point to my list of questions. So much to think about!
@cmluofl did you have an opportunity to visit any/all? If not, is there any particular school that your D loved during a visit, and why? Are any of these similar to her collegiate ideal? These 3 seem particulary varied; which isn’t a bad thing…but D definitely needs to prioritize her musts/wants/bonus features: Proximity (ease/cost of travelling to/from), setting (urban vs suburban), climate, curriculum, demographics, etc.
Also-congrats! Choosing among 3 is a great problem to have!
@owensfolks she has visited Marymount (but not a theater specific tour) and liked it. She also visited NIU and really liked it. Saw a show, spent the night in the newest dorm, and sat in some classes. There is also a possibility of getting in state tuition at NIU which is a bonus. We don’t know much about Cornish but they have given her a strong scholarship package. Her dream school is Depaul, but she is on the waitlist there.
@DoinResearch interesting comment about the cafeteria issue. She has a friend that goes there so I will have her ask. You are correct about NIU being Meisner only. My D is not a big fan of this. But she loves the fact they spend a semester of their junior year in Russia.
She has friends at each and they all tell her how much they like it there. Making decisions is not her strong point so it will be fun to watch (she is running out of time)
@cmluofl S and I have discussed that he really doesn’t know what technique/tool will be best for him, so we’re thinking better to have exposure to more than one than to drive deep. Also, I expressed to my son that in this political climate, there’s no way he’s going to Russia, even if I have a world of respect for the artists.
Cornish has had some financial and leadership issues in the last couple of years, do some research.
MMC’s cafe is closed on the weekends, but there is a diner right near the dorms that takes the meal plan.(Midtown Restaurant-look it up to see the menu) The dorm is on 55th so it wouldn’t make sense to travel to 71st St to eat if you weren’t there for class.
Thanks, all, for the feedback.
