I found out today; I got a call and they asked me to go up and do the whole interview thing March 17-20. Pretty exciting =). Does anyone know how many people get invited to do this?

congrats! i don't think i have a shot lol..

Thanks for letting us know that you found out. Have fun up at Syracuse! I'm still waiting, which is probably not a good sign. I did hear that people who aren't finalists get acceptance letters soon. So that is certainly something to look forward to. Good luck everyone!

My daughter also is going March 17-20 to interview for the Coronat. Does anyone know what she can expect? I read something in a 2005 "The Daily Orange" that says candidates are assigned a list of readings to discuss in a group session in front of a panel. That's all I've heard. Any other info is much appreciated, and good luck to all.

k, i can't tell you all the stuff, but there will be between 15-20 of you at the interviews...you will be doing various interview/social events, all of which are tremendous fun--don't freak out about this at all!

suggestions
--bring nice clothes but ones you're comfortable in--you need to prove yourself as a college student, so if you're stiff in a skirt, wear slacks...trite, but...be yourself
--check the weather...we froze to death last year but they've moved it later on so it's not as bad.
--the DO article is fairly accurate...other than what's in there, though, i really can't give you more info and be fair about it...this is somewhat of a competition.
--pretty much everything is paid for, but bring $ to buy souvenirs...also any of you who have been invited will automatically get at least the founder's scholarship...which is a nice package in itself. you won't find out until a day or two after you get home...sometimes a letter, sometimes a phone call.
--be prepared to have fun! the more relaxed you are, the better off you'll be.
enjoy, good luck, and see you soon!

djet2yank & teach7ela, my D got the call and is going up also. Where are you from?

Massachusetts - you?

New Jersey. Guess my D will have to get used to snow :)

New Jersey also! Where in jersey Leibow?

Ocean Township, Monmouth County, Exit 105 on the Parkway :)

wow really close! barnegat, ocean county, exit 67!

Has anybody heard if they got the Coronat yet? How did you (or your Ds) think you/they did? The waiting is excruciating. . .

No word here yet. D didn't enjoy the interviews too much. Said they were a bit tough. Kids aren't used to the open ended questions they got. Like all teenagers it's tough to get details from them. She had a great time with all the other finalists. I bet we will know by tonight. D was told the committee locks themselves in a room until they pick the winners. Can't imagine the decision making process will go into the weekend. Maybe they decided already and we just didn't get picked :(. Oh well, I have plenty of other things to keep me awake at night.

Leibow11, my husband called me about an hour after I posted my question - my D made it! (registered letter by UPS) Don't despair based on your D's feedback. My D said that the group discussion on the Middle East "went horribly", so who knows what they're looking for. Best of luck to you - I know exactly what you mean about being kept up at night!

teach7ela. Congrats to your family. Nothing here yet but just maybe our UPS guy is late. I can only hope. What's your D's name? I'll wait awhile but my daughter will want to know that your D made it.

Hi Leibow - hope you've gotten good news. My daughter's name is Sam (There were two Sams - tell her mine is the tall auburn haired one from Massachusetts - I don't want to post her full name here). Best of luck!

Teach - My D knows who your D is. No mail here so I guess we don't have to make any decisions. You, however, have to :) The whole group that went up this week were all bright, high achievers. "Losing" to any one of those kids is nothing to be ashamed of. I just have to convince my D of that. She makes us proud every day. But I hate when my high school kids are way smarter than I am :) Good luck and and congrats again. It's an exciting time for you for sure. We are fortunate in that we have other choices and are waiting on additional April 1st results.

Leibow, my daughter spent last week with the Coronat finalists. Please tell your daughter that my daughter came back extremely impressed by the participats. She said they were amazingly bright and great fun to be around. She was glad she didn't have to choose between them. It's no surprise that they all have many wonderful choices. Good luck to your daughter and all the finalists. They can all look forward to continued success wherever they go and whatever they do.

Irish, my daughter's sentiments (and mine) exactly.

Teach & Irish, got a message on our answering machine this afternoon, from UPS, to expect a package tomorrow that must be signed for. It's possible that the delivery scheduled for Friday just got screwed up. Fed Ex does it all the time. Anyway, my company doesn't use UPS so I can only guess. We'll see what arrives.

OK, I am a Coronat Scholar for the Class of 2011. I am an African American female who grew up in the inner city with a poor school district. I graduated as Valedictorian and was involved highly in extra-cirricular activities. My essays were good I felt, but my recommendations were even better.

As far as the process goes you apply to the College of Arts & Sciences, then from there they choose a couple hundred of applicants. They send you an e-mail and letter in the mail. From there they choose between 19-21 to come to SU for a series of interviews and discussions. Then they choose the 10 they want. If you want to see us, and read up on it yourself go to The Coronat Scholars Program and just click around.
