My daughter is in the running for my company's $2500 per year NMF scholarship. She's already been accepted into her first choice college, which offers $1000 per year NMF money. Can she get both?

No . She can only recieve one OFFICIALLY sponsored NM scholarship .

You can’t get two “official” NMF scholarships

However contact the school and find out if their offer is official or not. Tell them your situation.

That said, if your child’s school is a “needs-based aid” school, then any scholarship (corporate or otherwise) will get applied towards need, so it may not make much difference anyway…unless you have no need. In other words, the merit won’t be applied to your EFC.

I am confused by the $2500 NM Scholarship and the college-sponsored scholarships. If a student is selected for a $2500 NM Scholarship but his first choice school actually offers a larger, renewable award, does the student “turn down” the $2500 somehow? It is my understanding that a NMF may only receive one scholarship, and the student would obviously prefer the larger award. Is the timing such that the college-sponsored award would come through first, and that student would then not be awarded a $2500 NM Scholarship? Also, my son’s first choice university does not allow stackable, merit scholarships. If he would be awarded a scholarship (from the university) larger than the NM award at that school, and accepts the merit scholarship instead of the NM award issued by the school, would he still be eligible for the $2500 NM scholarship? Does this make ANY sense at all?

you need to call NMCorp with your specific situation. They are very good about working out choices so the child gets the max money.

The 'larger college award" may not be “official”…only $1k of it may be official…so you’d need to find that out, and then do the math.

“Also, my son’s first choice university does not allow stackable, merit scholarships.”

you need to get some clarification. The school’s policy may be that they don’t allow the stacking of THEIR scholarships. I’d be surprised if they didn’t allow you to stack outside scholarships…such as ones from local businesses, NMCorp, etc.

definately call the school financial aid office and be VERY specific. A corporate scholarship *administered *through the NMC may not be handled the same way as the NMF scholarships or one from the college itself. Also, different schools handle outside aid differently. some reduce need, some reduce EFC (though not many). Good luck
