So kiddo is a NMF, and a school she has chosen guarantees an award of $5000 annually if she selects them as first choice. (She has.) Tonight she was called and told she has been selected for a scholarship adminsterted by that university that will be full tuition/fees and room and board. Can she receive the additional monies? (I know...that might be a call to the school or MNS folks.) If not, would she still be considered a National Merit Scholarship winner for this school?

The $5000 per year is not an official NMF scholarship or is only partially a NMF scholarship.

It may have an official and non official component to it but that is not clear from your post. Many colleges have rules how multiple awards can be combined and lot depends on how your child’s scholarship is structured. This is one case where you need to talk to the college or look at their website for their policies.

Thanks, mazewanderer…yes, the NM component is $1000, the rest is college-sponsored. I will call the school, but from their website, it looks like all awards received cannot be higher than tuition/room and board…and she’s already beyond that w/scholarships she’s been offered from the school w/out the NMS. They may be willing to move from pot A to pot B…but would she be “counted” as a National Merit Scholar, if she is mailed an award from NMS for the college-sponsored scholarship?
