COSMOS 2015 Thread

Rejected from UCSD

Congrats to everyone who got into COSMOS! I’m disappointed I was rejected, but I got into my backup program, so it’s not to say I won’t be occupied over the summer.

Still waiting for my results omg

@pdogdalovehog did you apply to Davis? I think that’s the only campus whose results aren’t out yet.

If you look back five or six pages on this thread, you can probably find the Irvine stuff; I think all the acceptances and waitlists have been sent out.

I’m going to cry myself to bed tonight then. With my math text book of course and a samosa

But are you sure all the clusters acceptances have been sent out?

Yes, she is talented, if I can assert without being biased. She has 4 high school courses (Alg1 in 7th, Geometry in 8th, Alg2 w/Trig in 8th) and 4.0 GPA. She qualified for Alg-2 in 7th itself but we chose to have her repeat Geometry for social adjustment reasons (she was sitting in our high school for Alg-2 during period 1 with bunch of more grown kids and stood out socially, and hated it). She is also active in sports (qualified at county level), Arts (piano, vocal, dance), 3 years in speech and debate and president of a club that she founded at school. She has Duke TIP and CTY awards as well.

We just hope the trend continues…

@JayArRed She probably will be–qualifying for Alg II as a seventh grader is phenomenal (we only have one every five years or so; there are generally one or two people who take Alg II in eighth grade at my school; my school is very stringent with course sequences (as in, the one person in our grade who is accelerated was three grades ahead in elementary school), though).

@pdogdalovehog that’s what the other people from UCI said. I didn’t apply there, so I can’t say anything for myself. Perhaps they’re sending out emails late for your cluster. Check the earlier comments to see if anyone’s been accepted/waitlisted for your cluster, though.

I got rejected from UC Davis cluster 9. Also my backup plan (summer school at regular school) did not work out. I was planning on doing a required course over the summer so I can free up a period, but it was a lottery and I didn’t get in. So sad :frowning:

@csunshine91 maybe you can take a course or two at your community college? Or spend the summer volunteering! You’ll find something to do (:

Wow. Just got the rejection letter from UCSD. apparently in one of the clusters, only 18/600 students were accepted. That’s 3%.

Makes me feel a bit better…

Wait damn… That’s really, really selective. Now I’m seriously rethinking my decision. But then, money.

@topaz1116 Well, it’s only for a single cluster in UCSD.

Here’s the direct quote:

“COSMOS faculty read every cluster application, basing their decision on several criteria including overall GPA, math and science GPAs, recommendation letters from teachers, prerequisite work, math and science extracurricular activities, and responses to the essay questions. This year was our most competitive year in the history of our program. For some of our most competitive clusters, only 18 out of over 600 total applicants could be accommodated in the cluster.”

EVERYBODY:

Please post your decision as formatted below:

Decision: Accepted/Rejected/Waitlisted

Cluster Essay (1-10 Scale):
Teacher Rec #1 (1-10 Scale):
Teacher Rec #2 (1-10 Scale):
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:

Just include the information that was on your COSMOS application; no extra extracurriculars and stuff.

Decision: Accepted
Campus: UC Santa Cruz
Cluster: Number Theory and Discrete Math (#1); First choice
GPA (UW): 3.84
Grade Level: 10
Honors/AP/DE Courses + Grades: Honors English 9 (B+/B+); Honors English 10 (A); Honors Algebra II/Trig (B+/A); Honors Precalculus (A-); Honors Biology (A-/A); Honors Chemistry (A-); DE Spanish 3 (A)
Extracurriculars: Math/Science Teacher (10); Colorguard/Winterguard (10); Model UN (9, 10); Biotech Club (9, 10); Writing Editor at Literary Magazine for Middle Schoolers (9, 10)
General Essay (1-10 Scale): 9
Cluster Essay (1-10 Scale): 9
Teacher Rec #1 (1-10 Scale): 10
Teacher Rec #2 (1-10 Scale): 8
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My teacher recs were really good (one teacher told me what he put) and I’m a decent writer.

Decision: unknown but probably reject
Campus: Irvine
Clusters: 3 and 6
Gpa: 4.0 uw, 4.19 weighted( freshmen) 4.0 uc gpa cuz alg 2 don’t count as honor
Honors: alg2 h, A+ semester 1, B+ currently but will go up
Extra: speech and debate, swimming, karate black belt
General: 10
Cluster: 3
Rec1: 7
Rec2: 2
IDK bad ec’s only freshmen

Decision: Rejected
Campus: UCSD
Cluster: First choice cluster 2, Second choice cluster 1
Grade: Freshman
GPA: UW 4.0
Honors/AP/DE Courses: None (A2/Trig count? Taking that currently…)
Extracurriculars: Math competitions, 6+ hours of community service per week, Art and design skills, lots of CS background
General Essay: 8
Cluster Essay: 9
Teacher Recs: I have no idea; didn’t get a chance to read them. I’m guessing around a 6-7.
Why you think you were rejected:
Even though I had fantastic essays, I think I was rejected because of my lack of science background. I have little to none, and even though I applied to a computers and engineering cluster, I believe they still based a lot of their application decision on scientific background.
Also, one of my teacher recs was from a computer science teacher. That may not have been too great for me…

Decision: Accepted
Campus: UC Davis
Cluster (also, first choice or second choice?): Cluster 9: Mathematical Modeling of Biological Systems (first choice)
GPA (UW): 3.8
Honors/AP/DE Courses + Grades: Honors Pre-Calculus (A), then core classes
Extracurriculars: Math competitions (CML, AMC, Math Olympiad, etc.), Science Olympiad, other community/artsy stuff
General Essay (1-10 Scale): 8.5
Cluster Essay (1-10 Scale): 7
Teacher Rec #1 (1-10 Scale): 9
Teacher Rec #2 (1-10 Scale): 9.5
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Possibly because I do a lot of math/science related things so COSMOS fit me. Also, teachers at my school are very dedicated to their students’ success, so I’m sure that helped. Anyway, congrats to everyone!

I probably will not be attending COSMOS because I am leaning toward another camp, so yeah

Waitlisted
UCI
Cluster 4 (super long name, and first choice whoop)
I refuse to reveal my unweighted, but my weighted is 4.12 ish
Junior
Honors Chinese, AP Chinese, Honors Chem, APUSH, AP Chem, HAmLit (basically AP Lang and Comp), Honors Pre-Calc (again, I will not reveal grades for these, but let’s just say either an A or a B)
Extracurriculars: two years of sports (track and tennis), volunteering in and outside of school (really non specific stuff coordinated by clubs), sixth place regionally for a business related organization (2013), Science Olympiad first place for Chem Lab and multi-state invitational, first place for Chem Lab and Forensics (chemistry related event) regionals, and states is tomorrow so I have to wait on that (all this year), Chemistry Olympiad semifinalist candidate for my school.
General Essay: 7.5-8.2 ish?
Cluster Essay: 8.5
Teacher Rec #1: 9.5 (my chem teacher is new, but she loves me)
Teacher Rec #2: 6 ish? (my math teacher doesn’t like me)
Why I was waitlisted: I actually thought I would get rejected, partially because my GPA is actually really bad. I feel like in a way, all of my awards kind of saved me and put me in this gray zone where the admissions people couldn’t really reject me, but they couldn’t accept me either. I understand that other people deserve it a lot more than I do, and I can’t really complain about where I am now, I just have to wait it out.
** small note about my AP/Honors classes: my school doesn’t offer that many, and there’s a whole lot of hoops and prerequisites to jump through if you want to take them. I would take a lot more if my school had offered them.
