@michelle426 thanks :’( I’ll try again next year. I figured it wouldn’t happen anyway since I haven’t done math olympiad or anything like that. The only weird thing is that my status isn’t updated and I have seen people on this thread who have been notified about their rejection as well
I haven’t gotten my UCI rejection yet. Wish they would send it to me. Then I’d be able to move on.
I applied to UCI clusters 3 and 6. I havent heard anything from them.
Is it pretty much 100% that i have been rejected or is there still any chance?
So guys… has anyone heard back from UC Irvine? Or if on the application status, it just says cluster is not set, does it mean I’m rejected?
Decision: Rejected
Campus: UC Davis
Cluster: Biotechnology (1) and The Chemistry of Life (2)
GPA: 4.00
Grade Level: 10
Honors/AP/DE Courses + Grades: AP Euro and Honors Chem; As in both
Extracurriculars: Volunteering, Neuroscience club, piano, science tutor at school, quiz bowl
General Essay (1-10 Scale): 9
Cluster Essay (1-10 Scale): 7, 7
Teacher Rec #1 (1-10 Scale): I really can’t tell because this teacher has done many COSMOS recs for students, all of whom I know are incredibly smart (smarter than I am). I also don’t think she likes me.
Teacher Rec #2 (1-10 Scale): 9
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I don’t have many science/math-related extracurriculars, nor any awards/leadership skills. I repeated the same things in my general essay in my cluster essays, only more in depth. I think I showed drive in my essays, but not the credibility (i.e strong extracurriculars) to back it up. I know that Biotechnology is extremely competitive, so there’s that as well.
Decision: Waitlisted

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Only the lord knows.
@onemanshow and @kevinfang456 hey guys, if you came to the thread yesterday or earlier today, you would have seen the stuff I said about UCI acceptances. I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but if you did not receive an acceptance or waitlist email from UCI by yesterday, then you have been rejected. Don’t let this get you down, try to make the best of your summer.
Decision: Rejected
Campus: Davis
Cluster: math in biologic systems
GPA (UW): 4.0
Grade Level: 9
Honors/AP/DE Courses + Grades: Alg 2/ Trig H - A
Extracurriculars: Science fair, science olympiad, mathcounts, Idea to Impact (county thing), Somthing I forgot
General Essay (1-10 Scale): 6
Cluster Essay (1-10 Scale): 6
Teacher Rec #1 (1-10 Scale): 8
Teacher Rec #2 (1-10 Scale): 7
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: lower grade, essays kind of basic
I was accepted at UCD, and they offered me a generous financial aid package. However I have also been admitted into a research internship at the UCD med center, which comes with a stipend. I’m leaning towards the medical center one, just because it is more unique - any advice? does COSMOS really stand out as a summer program?
And to those who didn’t get in, there are so many opportunities otherwise. Look for a summer job or other research opportunities nearby - especially if there are any community colleges around you. good luck!
If you don’t go to Cosmos, give me ur spot lol
me too
I have not heard back from them
When did you find out you were waitlisted?
@k1808h I’m in the same spot as you (although I didn’t apply for/receive financial aid for COSMOS, my family is in that awkward place where we could technically afford COSMOS and would therefore not receive any financial aid, but it would make far, far more sense financially to go with something else)–I was accepted to an internship at Stanford (not a well-known one; it’s only for Bay Area residents), which is free, but COSMOS is more well-known. I’m probably going with Stanford, though. It’s more unique and it offers me different opportunities. I actually think COSMOS might be more selective than mine, but I really like the program.
If I were you, I’d pick the medical thing; at least at my school, COSMOS is absurdly generic (not to say it’s not a great program). Research looks far more unique, in my opinion.
Decision: Accepted
Campus: UCSD
Cluster (also, first choice or second choice?): Cluster 3: Living Oceans and Global Climate Change, my only choice
GPA (UW): 3.84
Grade Level: (current) 11th
Honors/AP/DE Courses + Grades: Eng 10 H, this year B in AP Calc AB and an A in AP Env Sci
Extracurriculars: I put only that I was a member in the school’s Student Sierra Club
General Essay (1-10 Scale): 9. I chose the “Describe a project/experience you worked on that furthered your interest in a specific math/science topic” prompt and talked about my school garden project. It didn’t really sound eloquent but I think it was interesting.
Cluster Essay (1-10 Scale): 8, it was a little cheesy
Teacher Rec #1 (1-10 Scale): 8 or 9, my AP Env Sci teacher. He’s cool.
Teacher Rec #2 (1-10 Scale): 6, my AP Calc teacher. She didn’t know me very well.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Less competitive cluster!
I mean, I didn’t have a ton of amazing classes or extracurriculars, so it must’ve been good letters and essays that displayed my passion for the environment?
Decision: Accepted
Campus: UC Davis
Cluster: Cluster 5: Computers in Biophysics and Robotics (first choice)
GPA (UW): 4.0
Honors/AP/DE Courses + Grades: Honors Physics (A), APCS (A), AP Euro (A), Honors English 10 (A), Precalculus (A)
Extracurriculars: Math competitions (AMC 10/12), Science Bowl, Playing violin for seniors and veterans, Cross Country and Track
General Essay (1-10 Scale): 8.5
Cluster Essay (1-10 Scale): 8, 8
Teacher Rec #1 (1-10 Scale): 8.5
Teacher Rec #2 (1-10 Scale): 8.5
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I took the right classes for my cluster and maybe my cluster isn’t so competitive. I haven’t seen anyone else with this cluster yet. My CS teacher knows me really well because we have small class sizes so she really can connect with everyone in the class. I think my general essay was relatively strong and really explained why I am passionate about math and science. One last reason might be that I mentioned I did cross country and how I was able to learn determination and hard work from the sport and apply it to my math and science pursuits.
Come from a pretty competitive school
Decision: Accepted

General Essay (1-10 Scale): 8
Cluster Essay (1-10 Scale): 8
Teacher Rec #1 (1-10 Scale): 7
Teacher Rec #2 (1-10 Scale): 7
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Academics are pretty strong, and my essays were decent enough to get me through the rest I guess. Probably won’t go in the end, so good luck to those waitlisted!
