COSMOS 2015 Thread

Did anyone join the UCSC facebook group yet?

Can anyone copy paste their UCD acceptance letter? I want to know whether I was rejected or waitlisted, they didn’t make it clear in my email.

@onemanshow If you haven’t heard anything, it means you’ve been rejected. @StanfordFTW Look at your COSMOS portal, if your cluster and campus says “not set”, that means you have been rejected.

For those who have been waitlisted, do you think it’s a good idea to email COSMOS for an intent to participate if the opportunity comes? I wanted to do this, especially because my backup summer plan is extremely flexible and completely optional.

@StanfordFTW If this is more direct: here is a rejection letter I got from COSMOS UCD from two years ago:
Dear Michelle,

Thank you for submitting an application for the COSMOS program at UC Davis. Your application materials have been reviewed by our faculty and staff. We were extremely impressed by the quality of the applications received but we are unfortunately only able to accommodate 200 students. With nearly 1000 applicants to the UC Davis program, we simply were not able to admit all qualified applicants.

We regret to inform you that we are unable to offer you a space in COSMOS 2013. We hope that your interest and hard work in science and mathematics will continue.

Thank you for applying to COSMOS and best wishes for a successful spring semester.

Sincerely,

@whit123 could u please post your acceptance email

@StanfordFTW Just check your acceptance status on your COSMOS portal. Easiest way. Here is the link: https://cosmos-ucop.ucdavis.edu/ the login will be top right corner.

BTW for those interested I have the APUSH testbank PM me for more infog

CONGRATULATIONS! You have been selected to participate in cluster “7: Biomedical Sciences” at the COSMOS program at the University of California, Davis. This residential program has been designed to provide you with an opportunity to interact with outstanding faculty, scholars, and researchers while you explore advanced topics in science and mathematics. We were extremely impressed by the achievements of over 1300 students who applied to the program. The above cluster placement is non-transferable. We look forward to meeting and working with you during this exciting four-week program.
(this is just the opening email)

When is the payment for ucd due

@whit123 when is payment and participant form due

@StanfordFTW DUDE. Just look on the online portal. How do you even know if you’ve been accepted?

@StanfordFTW and it’s best to just pay as soon as possible.

People keep posting their essay and teacher recommendation form scores on the 1-10 scale. How did you guys find those scores out? Where does it say?

@onemanshow We assume based on how much the teacher likes us and our grade in the class. There is no official number due to the fact that most teachers will not show you or tell you what they put on your rec.

^ Pretty much. One of my teachers told me some of what he put, though, because I had him last year and now we’re friends. Something about how I eat math for breakfast…

@topaz1116 and @michelle426 . So basically everyone who has put up their scores have just been guesses or estimates.

Pretty much.

Because why not…
Decision: Rejected (finally received my rejection email today!)
Campus: Irvine
Clusters: 8 and 3
GPA (UW): 4
Grade Level: 11
Honors/AP: H Precalc, H English, APUSH, AP Spanish, AP Bio, AP Psych (this year)
Extracurriculars: Pre-professional dance, magazine editor and events coordinator, mock trial, nonprofit for STEM, advisory committee for school principal
General essay: 7
Cluster Essay: 7, 8
Teacher Rec #1: 9
Teacher Rec #2: 8
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: eh essays could have been better, but other than that, who knows?

Decision: Accepted
School: Very competitive, San Gabriel Valley [LA]
Campus: UC Irvine
Cluster 6 and 8 Genes, Genomes, and Biocontrol (got into 8)
GPA (UW): 3.8 (W): Not completely sure, somewhere near a 4.2
Grade Level: (current) 11

Honors/AP/DE Courses + Grades: This year - AP Chemistry, APUSH, APENG; last year - AP Biology, Honors English
Extracurriculars: president of a national honor society and another club, medical assistant at non-profit hospital, leadership in an animal affinity club, help blind people through animal therapy (it’s a lot more complicated - but I think this really helped), marching band, cross country, tutor (AP Bio, Bio, AP Chem, chem, geometry, algebra 2)
SAT Biology - 800

General Essay (1-10 Scale): not sure

Cluster Essay (1-10 Scale): not sure

Teacher Rec #1 (1-10 Scale): somewhere between 9 and 10, I think my AP Biology teacher really liked me

Teacher Rec #2 (1-10 Scale): probably a 9, my AP Chemistry teacher is the advisor for the animal club and she is really nice - probably wrote a good rec for everyone that asked her

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Good recommendations, strong extracurriculars, high grades in math and science [I set the curve in AP Biology] I think in my essays I stressed my drive to work hard. Also, the stuff we are doing in cluster 8 is very similar to labs we did in my AP Bio class so I drew parallels
