COSMOS 2016!

Waitlisted for UCSD Cluster 4: When Disaster Strikes: Earthquake Engineering. Hoping that someone drops

Does anyone have any experience in the Biomedical Science cluster at UCD? I was a bit hesitant to apply for the cluster, as Iā€™m more interested in chemistry than biology, but biology is a close second.

What did you think of the program? How difficult/basic was the curriculum?

HOW MANY PPL ARE ON THE WAITLIST RN?

I was waitlisted for UCSD Cluster 4 Earthquake engineering too!

@clin1004 What were your stats?

I got waitlisted for cluster 5 at UCSC.

Got into UCSD cluster 3!!

Should I make a Facebook group for 2016 UCSD?

For all of you guys going to UCSC, thereā€™s a Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/1699995066911322/ but I havenā€™t joined yet because I donā€™t want to be the first one lol

@solarflare9000 I was really surprised that I was accepted, since Iā€™m a freshman with relatively no experience. But Iā€™m really glad that I got in

Stats:

Applied: UCSC, Cluster 5, Video Games: The Design of Fun from Concept to Code

Grade: Freshman

GPA: I didnā€™t get to see my transcript but Iā€™m very sure it was 4.0 unweighted

Math Courses Completed: Geometry, currently in Algebra 2

Science: Currently in Biology

5 Extracurriculars: FRC Robotics, Computer Science Club, ROV Team, Math Club, 3D Printing Manager (at my former middle school)

Letters of Rec: 7th/8th Grade Science/Computer Science Elective teacher & Algebra 2 teacher. My 7th/8th grade teacherā€™s son got into COSMOS a long time ago so I think his recommendation was good. I also know my Algebra 2 teacher is great at recommending students so I think that helped too.

Cluster Essay: I talked about how I liked playing games, especially video games, and then explained how games made by computer programming were the best. I talked about my experience with programming and how I wanted to learn other elements of computer science. I summed it up by saying how taking this course would help me in the future.

Main Essay - Describe a project or experience you worked on that furthered your interest in a specific math/science topic: I talked about how Scratch introduced me to computer programming and got me interested in it. I explained how I taught myself computer programming and talked about what Iā€™m doing in computer programming today, then ended with how computer programming helped shape me as an individual.

50 Words - I envision COSMOS as a foundation for a future in computer science. I believe I possess the necessary skills and qualities to utilize the opportunities COSMOS provides me with as stepping-stones to success. I desire to determinedly dedicate myself to make the best out of my experience at COSMOS.

Hope this was helpful to others! Good luck applying to COSMOS next year!

Congratulations! @clin1004

Hey guys for UCSD, does anyone know the link to the UCSD COSMOS 2016 Facebook page? They say it exists but I canā€™t find it.

Is it common for ppl who are waitlisted to get accepted? Also, where do we check what position we are on the waitlist?

^^

@tree329 ā€œOfficial UCSD Cosmos 2016ā€ is a private group! Just search ā€œUCSD COSMOS 2016ā€ in the search bar, click ā€œgroupsā€ in top right-ish panel, and you should find it

Rejected from UCD (Mathematics | Quantum Mechanics and Applications to Nanotechnology). Really bummed because this was really the only thing I applied to for summer since I was dealing with a lot of stuff these past few months. Iā€™ll probably take community college courses and look for a summer job (or any suggestions? :frowning: ).

Stats:
Grade: Junior
GPA: 3.974 U/W 4.175 W
Math Courses Completed: Algebra II in summer after Freshmen, Calculus I in summer after Sophomore, Currently self-studying for the BC test (I didnā€™t mention this ughhhhh!)
Science: Currently in AP Chemistry and Intro to Engineering, self-studying Computer Science (didnā€™t mention this eitherā€¦ T_T )
Extracurriculars: FTC Robotics (Control Award + Co-captain 2015-2016), Key Club (Division Historian 2014-2016, Newsletter Editor 2015-2016, Division Head Task Coordinator 2015-2016, Various awards such as officer of the month/most community service hours/etc), Band (Section Leader 2014-2015), MathCounts (a middle school math competition club)
Letters of Rec: AP Chem teacher & Engineering teacher. Iā€™ve know my AP Chem teacher for 2 years and Iā€™m sure her letter of recommendation was really great. My engineering teacher only had a few hours to submit his rec because my other math teacher I asked flakedā€¦ (this was probably the worst part)
Cluster Essay 1: I described my affinity and love for mathematics and all things logical (physics, economics, programming). How I took extra math classes just because they fascinated me.
Cluster Essay 2: I kind of talked about how Chemistry and AP Chemistry sparked an interest in me in the quantum world and nanotechnology. Yet it was unsatisfying because I learned how to solve textbook questions rather than learn about the what, why, where, how. So experiencing actual research immersion at COSMOS would fit with my desire to understand more and learn more.
Main Essay - What are you most excited about attending COSMOS: I talked about how experiencing the college life and working with others in a team to learn something sounded really amazing. It was an opportunity to grow more as a social person andā€¦ I think that was pretty much it.
50 Words - I mentioned how I might have to leave a day early due to certain obligations. (I emailed the UCD rep and he said itā€™s uncommon, but others have done so in the past). I really hate myself for putting this, because I could have discussed about self-studying Calc BC and Computer Science.

Overall, my essays were weak, I did not have that many extracurriculars that aligned with my passion, and my essays were fairly shallow (a teacher read it and said he would not change a thing, because it conveyed so much of who I was, but Iā€™m not sure if he was right).
Congratulations to everyone who were accepted!
For next year, I know I can apply, but does anyone know if and how many seniors actually were accepted?

@bellefauna found it! theres only like 1 person in the group minus the UCSD account. More people need to join!

@tree329 hopefully Iā€™ll be able to join you after May 7 ;~;

@bellefauna Oh thanks for letting me know! Btw, did you find out where you are on the list?

@gzuzumaki how do we check that? i called them on monday and they said they wonā€™t release that information.

Anybody get off the waitlist and got accepted yet?

I think they notify waitlisted people after the confirmation date! I know a girl who got in off the waitlist last year, but it was after May 15 (the date for us).
