@livelaughsmile can’t wait to meet you too! we might even be roommates because people from different clusters are roommates!
@carolinaboi That’s really cool!! Best of luck with your CS endeavors–that’s an amazing field and I hope you get really far with it!
@herongraystairs That would be so cool!! I would love to room with you! Do you and everyone else in COSMOS UCD want to start a Facebook group like you suggested earlier?
@livelaughsmile I did Cluster 6: Combinatorics + Graph Theory. The dorms are really clean and well kept, although you will have to bunk with someone else. Although this may seem weird, it is actually great to have someone with you. Make sure to be tidy though, as it is their space as well. I would say the residential life is awesome. Near your rooms will be a common area. This is a great way to make new friends and play games! The food is above average, but not the best. They have lots of vegan options and will cater to your special dietary restrictions if needed. I recommend trying the Mongolian BBQ! Every day after having breakfast and every night before going to bed, you will have the opportunity to meet with your cluster and play some type of game. These events are always super fun and really draw the group together. I think the best part about attending COSMOS at UCD was meeting the great professors as well as students. A tip for everyone on this thread is to MAKE SURE TO BOND WITH THE PROFESSOR AND FELLOW PEERS, as they can help you later on. For example, the math professor that I had later on wrote a letter of rec for me, which I believe ultimately got me into SIP (RIP … I ended up not going). In addition, some of the older students that I met have helped me through APs and the college application process. Hope this helps!
@redwall3000 thank you again for such an informative post!! Your answer really helps and I’ll definitely be taking your advice about everything!! Ooh Mongolian BBQ sounds delicious It’s too bad you’ve already been to COSMOS because it seems like you would be an amazing person to meet as well! BTW, what info does COSMOS give you the months before it begins? Do you get a chance to connect with others who have also been accepted into the program?
@livelaughsmile COSMOS will give you a student handbook sometime in the middle of May that will detail dorm situations, what to bring, as well as lecture schedules. Make sure to pay attention to all the small details as they can make your 4 weeks horrible if you miss something. I did not get a chance to connect with others but if anyone else on this thread says that they got into UCD, make a facebook group or something along those lines so that you can get to know one another. Yeah, I wish I could attend COSMOS again tbh BTW, what grade are you in?
Oh like what kind of small details?
I wouldn’t want my myself or anyone else to have a bad experience! I’m currently a junior, this is the first year that I’ve applied to COSMOS wish I’d thought to do it earlier ha ha
@redwall3000 Did you bring a laptop and a bike? I’m not sure if either would be possible for me but I don’t want to have difficulty completing my work and getting to class. Do you learn a lot? How do you think COSMOS compares to taking some classes at a community college over the summer? Thank you so much!!!
@boldy Yes, a laptop is a MUST as you will have to eventually produce a research project. I did not bring a bike but that was a big mistake. Since the weather is hot, you want to spend the least amount of time in the sun. Just make sure to bring 2-3 locks for your bike as people will sometimes try to break your lock to steal your bikes. I did learn a lot of things at COSMOS. However, I think the effort you put in ultimately determines how much you learn. COSMOS is so much more valuable than taking classes at a community college as it is one of the top 10 STEM programs offered in the US. Furthermore, if you do not accept their offer now, they will most likely reject you next year for yield projection. Just remember that taking community college classes does not require an application while COSMOS does. BTW, COSMOS will raise your chances of getting into a UC by a lot, so don’t miss this opportunity!
Hey guys, I was accepted to UCI COSMOS, but also applied to SIP. If I am accepted to SIP, which program would you guys recommend I attend?
@woohooooooo Same here! I was accepted for the UCI campus but also applied to UCSC SIP. If anyone has experience or opinion about either one, please let us know!
@tofudeer the COSMOS admission acceptance date and SIP decisions are conflicting (both on 4/6)… if the conflict is relevant (as in, you are accepted to SIP as well) what do you plan to do about it?
I am not 100% sure, but I feel like the best option would be to put a deposit on COSMOS… If you get into SIP, you then just lose what you deposited if you decide to attend SIP instead.
xD rejected from COSMOS but got into SSTP Congrats to those who got in !
@woohooooooo Pick COSMOS. They will never accept you ever again if you decline admission. SIP is far less prestigious than COSMOS, as it will not boost your app while COSMOS can help for all UCs. Hope this helps!
@redwall3000 thanks for the input! I understand that COSMOS is very beneficial to UC applications, but SIP seems to be more research based and more like an internship. Thus, would SIP actually be more beneficial for future summer programs application or look better trying to secure a research internship because it is more relevant to research?
@woohooooooo
From my understanding, SIP is not as well known as COSMOS. Just the prestige itself should help secure a research internship.
@carolinaboi which cluster?
Does anyone know if you can withdraw your deposit for accepting an admission offer for COSMOS after April 6th and if so by when? The acceptance decisions for another summer program are finalized later, and I was unsure if I should accept the offer in case I am accepted into the other program.
