COSMOS 2020 Thread

@pingu2020 I did not receive that email… I paid for both my kids right after they registered. But I did notice when I double checked just now, that one of them has a portal that is now “in review”. The other is still listed as “complete”. Makes sense that different clusters would be reading applications at different paces.

@divarose Thank you! I guess I had missed paying the 75 cent fee - it says completed now. Interesting that they change it to In Review.

Did anybody apply to UC Davis clusters 1 and 3?

Hi @Chargers85
Sorry for the late reply, but hope this helps. I attended COSMOS 2019 at UCI. The campus is nice, we stayed in the Middle Earth Housing. The area where we had all our meals was being torn down and rebuilt for this year, so I expect it to be a lot nicer. The daily life is pretty restrictive, but it’s understandable for safety reasons on their end. They have enclosed boundaries within campus you may not leave, you must have key card, and generally a buddy with you. But they do have excursions with groups off-campus which is really. Feel free to shoot any questions you have

@TheRose21 I saw that you attended the biofuels cluster at UCSD, and I was reading through all your comments - they were super super helpful!! Thank you so much for taking the time to write them! :smiley: I was wondering: how much free time do you get on a normal day for the biofuels cluster? Since you don’t really have homework? If I get in, I’m considering taking an online course at the same time as COSMOS.

@acastleonacloud
I had literally all day lol! That was an amazing part of being in the biofuel cluster (and not having to complete lab assignments and other stuff). My friend group (if you’re reading this, I love and miss you all) would literally play out on the ERC (Elenor Roosevelt College) lawn every afternoon after getting back from the lab around 3-4. We’d shower or change clothes, grab a frisbee and arrange teams, and one of my friends who was on an ultimate frisbee team would teach us how to properly play. We also played hide-and-go-seek and volleyball. FYI, my friend group was all cluster 3&6 people (ocean &biofuel) with one person from cluster 7 (synthetic biology) so we probably had more free time than others. I’d see other clusters working on their assignments or studying.

We’d go eat dinner anywhere from 5-7 as a group, then go to programming (essentially mandatory socializing where the RAs set up fun games and activities) until 10. Then we had suite time (I love you 201 :slight_smile: until 11- my suite watched gossip girl, gossiped, played board games and card games, etc. After 11pm, it’s lights out and an RA can see blatantly obvious signs of someone on a well lit electronic screen from outside the window and will yell at you to go to bed. Walking 20,000 steps a day across campus and sitting through 3 hours lectures is definitely tiring; I usually went to bed as soon as possible.

Since we had free time from 4-8, many people did use the time to complete their assignments or study for the SAT or work on college apps, but I haven’t heard of anyone who has been balsy enough to complete a full online course. I managed to finish my AP summer homework, and one weekend me and a friend went to the library to study, but that was the most I got done. I personally wanted to make the most of my experience by spending time with my Cosmospolitians :slight_smile:

Yes y’all, COSMOS was a dream for me and I am so grateful to have gotten the opportunity to experience it. Good luck, and please let me know when decisions come out! Y’all are amazing people and so worthy of COSMOS.

Anyone applying to UCSD have their application status as “In Review”?

I do

@Lilina which clusters did you apply to?

@lec717 my application says that aswell and I applied to clusters 6 & 4

@TheRose21 My first choice is cluster 6 at UCSD and it sounds so fun!!! I don’t really think I’m getting in though :frowning:

@TheRose21 thank you SO SO SO MUCH for all your advice :smiley: That sounds amazing!!!

Do you all think the camps will happen this summer? Infact would any camps/ research projects, given Covid-19? Thoughts?

Came here to ask the same question. Gov. Newsom is saying that K-12 schools probably won’t reopen before the fall.

Not that my 8th grader was likely to have gotten accepted to COSMOS regardless. But if it’s not held in 2020, that reduces his chances of acceptance for 2021 & 2022 since the teens who would’ve gone this summer will still be eligible.

Hi. Does anyone have an idea on when we will receive word back on whether we were accepted or not?

@mmmmmbbbb should be out by March 27

@CrimsonWife Most of the kids in cosmos are rising seniors.

Isn’t that because of the pre-reqs? A lot of the clusters have Algebra 2 as a pre-req and the typical public school student takes that in 11th these days with Common Core pushing Algebra 1 back to 9th. My son is taking it this year in 8th so he’s eligible a lot sooner than most.

It’s been a while since my child did it, but if I recall, rising seniors are given somewhat of a preference.

@vhsdad
Actually, this is a common misconception! I was a rising junior when I attended COSMOS. At UCSD for COSMOS '19 the breakdown by grade was 40% rising juniors, 40% rising seniors, and 20% rising sophomores.
