cost of books

about how much will it cost me in books if i am going into a science major?

My son typically spends between $600-$1000 per semester buying used when he can find it.

I spent (on average) between $400 and $600 on books as a biology major. It will get cheaper as you go on, as the intro bio books for L112, C117, and org. chem are extremely expensive, but you often don’t use the textbooks for some upper level classes

Get to know older kids in your major because my son’s neighbor gave him his genetics book for free because the bookstore will only buy back a certain number of each book. And soccergurl is right, that’s what my son was spending freshman and sophomore year when I was paying for the books.

Make sure you shop around online for the best book prices as well. I found most of my books for at least half of what they were at TIS or the IU Bookstore. It takes some digging sometimes, but it’s definitely worth it :)

You can also check out the classifieds on OneStart. Lots of books for sale directly from students.

I also forgot to add, sometimes keeping your books is more beneficial than selling them back. I know I used my C117 book again for the first half of N330, and you used the same book for orgo 1 and 2. Also, if you’re planning on taking the MCAT you’ll want them to study with, and some are useful for grad school (primarily genetics, molecular bio, etc)

thank you so much everyone! i am currently trying to save up for my books, and just want to make sure that I have enough to cover them. soccergurl, is 400-600 dollars per semester or per year?

That was per semester

IU just made an announcement about eTexts which may reduce textbook costs for future students.

[Pioneering agreements will reduce cost of eTexts for IU students: IU News Room: Indiana University](<a href=“Pioneering agreements will reduce cost of eTexts for IU students: IU News Room: Indiana University”>Pioneering agreements will reduce cost of eTexts for IU students: IU News Room: Indiana University)

Fairly wide range, I’d think. Including electives because my child spent $125 just for ONE short class at Intensive Freshman Seminar. But then she spent LESS than $400 for her first semester (5 classes). 2nd semester was about $450 (5 classes). This year she spent $425 (6 classes). She’s a science major, but not hard sciences. A friend of mine’s daughter in Indy spent nearly $700 for only 4 classes (I forget her major…lots of bio/chem/psych…something in the health field). So…I’d say plan on $400 min and up to $700. I know that’s a big range but you want to be prepared. Cheaper to buy used, cheaper still to rent, cheap to get Ibooks if offered. These are PER SEMESTER. Good luck.
