I was wondering if a course taught by a teacher with high ratings from students and ratemyprofessor.com would justify a higher cost than a teacher with lower ratings from students and from the rate website as well.

The high rating teacher's class is in person (lecture/discussion) while the teacher with lower ratings is an online class.

The reason the costs are different is because the course from the "better" teacher is taken at a local community college (that would transfer credits over to the 4-year institution I'm at). I would need to pay the tuition for that school as well since my full-time student tuition does not apply to this situation, although the cost for a 3-cr course at that CC is only $375.

I could take the "worse" teacher that teaches at the institution I'm in to save $375, but I do not know if it is worth the teacher's quality.

Thank you CC!

Keep in mind that ratings are relative. The people who are rating the “better” professor are comparing him to the CC professors, which are (generally speaking) worse/more unpredictable compared to University professors. The “worse” professor is being compared to other teachers at your school, and chances are your school’s professors tend to be better than those at a CC.

That’s not to say all university professors are amazing or that all CC ones are awful… just that there are different standards at the two. But CC has a much higher variance in terms of quality. It’s also likely to cover different material, CC tends to go less in-depth, especially if you’re taking the class online. If you’re interested in the subject, or if it’s a pre-req of some sort, you’ll be missing out.

I’d say take it at your school, unless you can find a better comparison to use than ratemyprofessor.

Oh I have actual ratings from students too (when I said from the students as well). Of course I would not trust only ratemyprofessor, as I have had a couple professors this year that defied what was written on that website.

There is a facebook group for my class for the University students and people said there that she doesn’t teach well/doesn’t seem to care, is unorganized and is vague, and does not seem to be a true professor (not knowledgable about her field). Oh and the CC class is the lecture/discussion class. The class offered at the university is the online one.
