Is it possible to coterm in four years at Stanford? I know that Harvard allows students to coterm in four years if they complete their required credits in time.
Also, can you coterm in any graduate discipline? Or is it only possible to do so in specific areas? Thanks for your help.

You can coterm in 4 years if you can finish the bachelor’s in 3 years. That’s 9 quarters, or an average of 20 units per quarter. I know someone who did just that (and cotermed in CS for his fourth year), but he did that by supplementing his normal course load with music and activity courses, so it wasn’t too difficult for him. Obviously this would be easier for some majors; it’d be impossible for some engineering majors like mechE, which has a ton of unit requirements. Not all departments offer the coterm, so you’ll have to check the ones you’re interested in (see [STANFORD BULLETIN](http://bulletin.stanford.edu)), but I think most do.

I think if you take the right pre-req classes it is possible to co-term in any discipline assuming you’re a strong candidate. You do have to apply for a co-term, and I don’t know the acceptance rates but it’s not something you just sign up for randomly.

you also don’t always have to do exactly 4 or exactly 5 years. some departments let you do 4 years and a quarter or 4 years and 2 quarters.
depending on the department, also, you can disperse some of the grad classes while you take undergrad classes (e.g. Public Policy)

^ you’re supposed to disperse the grad classes among your undergrad classes, mostly in the last (4th) year in undergrad, though I’m not sure whether grad classes taken before that can count toward the coterm.

There are some departments that explicitly say you can’t coterm, but you most likely wouldn’t want to coterm in them anyway (e.g. linguistics).
