I am thinking about coterming at Stanford either for mathematics or some sort of engineering (chemical or maybe aero/astro). Can someone explain the rigor of the workload when coterming and whether or not it really is necessary if you plan on going to grad school anyway? I really am in the dark about this, so any info would be greatly appreciated. :)

If you are sure that you want to go for PhD, there's no reason to coterm. However, even if you are sure now, you may very well change your mind. Luckily for you, you don't have to decide on that for a couple of years, and by then you'll have a better idea what it is you want to do.

I don't know about math/engineering, but there was a lovely little thread about coterm stuff a while ago...here i'll try to bump it for you
