Could anyone help me narrow down my college list?

So it seems that with every shiny brochure I get and every entertaining school website I visit, I keep adding new schools! Lol, so far it's:

MIT (non-negotiable! :D haha I LOVE this school)
Harvard
Yale
Vanderbilt
Caltech
Harvey Mudd
Columbia
University College London
Stanford
Penn State - Schreyer Honors College
UNC - Chapel Hill
UCONN
UMASS - Amherst

and actually two more but I can't remember :p My main interest is in the sciences and math and I plan to major in chemistry with the ultimate goal of medical school. Are there any colleges on here that would be beneficial to drop? The last two are safeties but I have a high interest in all of the rest.

Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance :)

Drop either UConn or UMass depending on where you’re in-state
UCL seems kind of random, and if you aren’t really all that interested in Stanford, I’d drop that too (just judging by its location in your list)

I was definitely in the same position. I applied to 10 schools, 8 LACs, and 6 of those LACs were matches lol. It was super hard to decide where to go haha

Oh, and I don’t know if it’s legal to apply to both Mudd and Caltech :b

Take 1 of your first 9 colleges out-- find out which one has the least financial aid. You’re not going to want undergraduate loans when you’re headed to med school. Or just find the one that least matches your interests if your finances are in-check for college. I don’t know your interests or the schools well enough to judge which one isn’t right.

Yay for MIT!

I agree with CelaPlusAimaple…you probably want to drop the public schools that you’re not in state for. It’s not as worth it.

Thanks for the advice! I’ll probably drop UMass because I’m in-state for UCONN. Also yeah, Stanford is kind of there due to my parents so it can probably go. Maybe Penn state and UNC too. Haha wow, it’s weird how now I can cut things out :p

I really would like to go to school in England because I’ve lived there before and loved it but it would just be so complicated to get over there that I’m not entirely sure :/

Any other suggestions? I guess I want schools that have good study abroad programs as well. And good research opportunities for undergrads. I feel like if I go on I’m going to be describing MIT, lol, so which schools are least like that? :)

haha I also added WashU

You listed many colleges/universities that are highly selective. Since you have years of schooling ahead do your grades and scores qualify for merit aid at any of these? Be sure to have a safety as well as a financial safety you would attend, if needed.

A person who is a good fit at Harvey Mudd would not be a good fit at Vanderbilt and vice versa.

Research the “fit” of each school more. People who go to Columbia do so because they love city life. People who go to Vanderbilt like the large greek (fraternities/sororities) scene. And so on. Decide what type of school you could see yourself attending and go from there.

^I actually disagree. I think thaty some people are more flexible in their schools than others. After narrowing down my list, it came to Carleton vs. UVa, which are two COMPLETELY different schools, and yet I fell in love with both. I’m definitely happy with my choice, but I could really see myself as happy at any of the schools where I applied - a list that was just as diverse as the OP’s.

That being said, I applied to 12 colleges and while it was manageable it wasn’t great. I’d take another poster’s advice and cut out one of UMass, UConn, or Penn State, depending where you’re in-I’m pretty sure you’ll get into all three, so cut the one you like the least.

If you’re prepapred to do essays, you should be okay applying to the rest. Although I’d cut the two you can’t remember - if you can’t remember them, then they’re probably not worth adding more work.

@Georgia Girl

Well I’m not going to do one of those big chances post things :stuck_out_tongue: but just a quick review: I have a 2220 SAT (710 CR 710 M 800 W), 700 Chem, 730 Spanish, 790 Math II. I have an unweighted GPA of 4.0 in the most rigorous courseload my school offers, am #2/300+ in my class and have some decent, although not really spectacular ECs and awards.

UCONN’s my financial safety because it’s in-state and looking at their scholarship requirements, I’m basically guaranteed a full-ride,lol :)

Okay so now it’s:

MIT
WashU
Harvard
Yale
Vanderbilt
Harvey Mudd
CalTech
Columbia
UCONN

I know that some of them are complete opposites but each one has something I really like about it.

Anyways, I have to say that’s pretty good, lol  Although only issue is, I have 1 safety, 8 reaches, and no matches  Haha anyone have any good match suggestions?

University of Rochester is a match
