I live an hour commute away, but I have been recommended to live near campus. I’m thinking of working out my housing after the semester starts and just commute to begin. Any thoughts?
well, just yesterday Housing offered a tiny incentive for continuing students to move to off-campus housing and thus freeing up spaces. So there must still be others in your position, without housing. I myself (as a student not as a worker) would probably find the 1 hour commute very draining after a while, thought that commute is probably the norm for Bay Area workers nowadays.
If you’re looking for roommates for off-campus housing, now may still not be too late if you look, i.e. Facebook or elsewhere. I would think it would be harder to find roommates after say Aug 1.
I would seriously start working on the housing search NOW because 1) I don’t think that an hour commute each way is going to get any more enchanting than it sounds right now, which is “terrible”, and 2) it’s is going to take longer than you think, especially when you are trying to juggle it with actually going to school (maybe even your freshman year - I’m not sure if you’re a newbie). The chances of you securing something after the semester has started are going to go wayyyy down. There are probably people still looking for that one person to round out an apartment. My D did that as her sophomore year was winding up and her on-campus housing was coming to an end and she didn’t want to room with her friends.
Yes, Facebook, Cal Rentals: https://och.berkeley.edu/, uloop: https://berkeley.uloop.com/housing/index.php/available, and I’m sure others.
As Cal continues to admit more people, the pressure on the off-campus housing market will just increase.
