I know that Berkeley only garuntees 1 year of housing, but they have a service called Cal rentals that helps you with off campus housing. Does Cal rentals let you look for new people to share an apartment with? I’m a bit concerned about having no one to room with after one year.
If you are starting next fall, you will hopefully wind up with roommates, floor mates, classmates, team mates or club mates that you can room with after that first year. I don’t know that Cal Rentals is any different than any other rental situation around Cal in that you can find places to rent for 1, 2, 3, or 4 people (larger groups than that are tougher to find housing for). D is coming off of 2 years of on-campus living (1st year dorm, 2nd year apartment) and found a spot with 3 other girls in an off-campus rental (on Facebook, BTW). There IS a fair amount of off-campus housing because there is a big need - you may find it through Cal Rents, Facebook, a friend who’s graduating, etc.
My only suggestion is that if you and your potential roomies put in for on-campus housing again for your sophomore year, start looking at off-campus places BEFORE the on-campus offers come out in mid-late March. Once those offers/rejections are released, there is a lot of scrambling.
The answer to you question is yes. But you will get on campus housing if you want it next year. But honestly you probably won’t want it because it’s expensive.
Plus people use the roommate option of the on campus housing application more when they’re applying for sophomore year. And you will like your roommates and want to room with them again. Or you will make friends and you will want to find an apartment with them.
It’s too early to worry about that. It is April and almost everyone already has housing for next year. It’s not even May. It’ll be fine. There’s so many other ways to find roommates and housing.
