I am a freshman in highschool (9th grade) and all of my classes are 10th grade honors as well as one AP class.
Information regarding GPA:
Weighted cumulative: 96.5
Unweighted cumulative: 91.5
Weighted GPA on 5.0 scale: 4.3
Unweighted GPA on 4.0 scale: 3.75
My extra curricular activities include:
Marching Band
Anchor club
Key club
Skills USA
I plan to do all of these activities throughout my highschool career along with others that might interest me.
My main questions is what kind of colleges could I attend?
Jeez, you’re too young to start worrying about this now. I personally didn’t even start thinking about college until halfway through junior year. Honestly, it’s not worth the stress.
Come back in two or three years for some better advice, and just relax.
As the other comment advised you, you are too young to stress about college. Additionally, things can change a lot in your final years, therefore the options you will consider now may vary in the following years.
So many questions from freshmen with no scores, only part of one semester of hs grades, a few months in a few ECs, no rigor yet, etc. Let’s answer in a new way: as a first semester freshman, no chance at all.
First, pat yourself on the back for caring. Now i’m hoping to gently advise you to stop worrying. It can make you crazy and you still have years to go.
Rest assured that there are many many colleges out there waiting for you. The uber competition that you hear about in the press and probably around your high school, really surrounds only the top maybe 20-25 LACs and the top few universities. Thats maybe 40 schools out of 3000-approximate schools.
Many of the remaining 3000 are amazing (amazing!) colleges with incredible programs. It’s worth knowing also that 70% of colleges/unis in the USA go unfilled each year.
And many of the ones unfilled are wonderful schools.
Pat yourself on the back for caring. And then please relax and enjoy high school.
If you were my child, knowing what I know now about college admissions, I’d advise –
- Take only the APs that actually interest you. Don’t just take an AP to “add rigor” to your transcript. What kind of life are you leading if you only do what others tell you to do instead of what truly interests you? Doing only what you’re “supposed” to do will make you if not crazy then less than fulfilled. You will never find your interests and without passion in your life for what interests you, then it’s doubtful that you will ever live up to your potential.
- Use the time NOT studying for APs that you only marginally like to instead do other things that interest you. For example: Do you secretly admire a chef on TV? Then start cooking at home and maybe volunteer at soup kitchens or work in a restaurant. Do you love drawing? Start spending time iwth pencil and paper drawing things that you find interesting. Drawing and art are underappreciated skills. They teach practical problem solving, aesthetics, etc. Where would we be if Steve Jobs hadn't dropped out of school and taken an Asian calligraphy class? Do you love music or video games? Use the extra time in your day to pursue those passions -- music and video games are both fun and billion dollar industries (if you parents ask what on earth you're doing, you can tell them that: Mom, dad, it's a billion dollar industry). Do you like environmental issues? Volunteer for local parks, go for hikes, take handicapped people on hikes. Etc. See if you can find things to fill your life that are NOT resume enhancers. Ironically if you do, then you will enhance your resume and you will find things that you are good at and that you love.
