Could I get into UNC Chapel Hill?

Hi I'm Jamie :-)
I am so nervous about college! Please give me your input if you can ease my mind haha :) and please don't be mean!
I am a junior in high school but I feel like I completely messed up freshman year!
My 9th grade GPA was: 3.375 unweighted and 3.875 weighted
My 10th grade GPA was: 3.777 unweighted and 4.333 weighted
This year I plan on a 3.875 unweighted and a 4.77 weighted
I was in Anime club, Orchestra, Key Club, Foreign Language club, HOSA, Pride and Junior Civitan Club, and next year I want to do astronomy club and key club again
I want to play tennis in the fall because so far I haven't done any sports!
I volunteered over 100 hours at the hospital
I will intern at a children tumor research center, and hope to get a job somewhere this summer.
I am an asian girl who is in-state and I have really wanted to go here since I was a kid. PLEASE let me know or give me some advice on how I can improve my chances.
Also, I have not taken the SAT yet, but I plan to take it until I get at least a 2000.
Thanks in advance! :-)

Hi, jamielive! I’m sorry no one has responded yet. I think that’s partly because we don’t have enough info yet. But I will take a stab at it anyway.

It sounds as if you are steadily getting your GPA up there, so that’s all to the good. Also, your ECs are VERY impressive, which certainly helps.

Best wishes with your SATs! Are you planning to take the PSAT? It’s good prep for the SAT (shorter and therefore easier). And, if you do well, you may qualify for scholarships.

You may want to visit the SAT/ACT forum to glean advice re prepping for the SAT. There are a gazillion prep books out there, several of which are quite good.

You may also want to take a writing course online or at your local CC (in the summer, perhaps, if feasible?). UNC seems to put a lot of emphasis on good essays, so the more you can hone your writing skills the better.

Also, unless you major in the hard sciences, you will write a LOT of term papers during college, so the more writing experience you have the better. It couldn’t hurt!

Best of luck!

Good luck!

Of the couple of years left for college apps, your thoughts will certainly bend and flip; depending on your performance and changing perspective. One advice I will give is that you should not have that many clubs on your plate. Choose those that are unique and describe you. Key club, junior civitan, orchestra are excellent as they focus on service and talent. From what I’m seeing, you continually add on new clubs on your list–which is great but what colleges search for is commitment. I would select those organization that you know you can improve and earn a leadership position in eventually. Even if you don’t receive a position, don’t just slack off as a member. Participation means a lot to colleges. UNC has perhaps over a hundred organizations, and they all focus on something unique. Being part of that uniqueness also factors in greatly.

Your GPA: Have it up and improving. Don’t let junior year pose as a ditch on your path. Don’t necessarily over risk yourself to classes that you struggle with greatly at current. Instead, take challenging courses that fill your passion. Your uw gpa could use a boost. However, a 4.77 wgpa looks promising. It means that you are truly applying yourself.

I don’t know what else to include seeing as you are a sophmore and it is pretty early in your HS experience. However, just keep treading and focus on school—not necessarily on how you will impress colleges b/c I know that can often be distracting.

Thank you so much! I really really appreciate your input and will try out a english class! I did take the psat twice, and hope to take the SAT in spring. I completely agree with the too many clubs thing! If my GPA will keep increasing could that make up for a bad freshman year? I think I will try getting a leadership position in one of the clubs instead of adding more thank you again everyone! :)

forget about freshmen year-what’s done is done…you need to move on and continue improving. Many colleges recognize that 9th grade is a transition year. Plus, colleges look for an upward trend… Take those SATIs ASAP (especially in 10th when they don’t factor in–better than to do the trial-and-error test in junior year). That way you have the entire summer before 11th to prepare…however don’t waste your entire summer studying for the SAT. Do something of higher interest to you…one that will attribute to your experience and personality.

my $0.02

dude, the average incoming freshman’s GPA was a 4.47, so your GPA is much above the average.

generally, in terms of GPA, 4.1 & down = low chance of acceptance, 4.2-4.4 = deferred, 4.5 & up = good chance at acceptance. (my school counselor actually called the chapel hill admissions office and asked them, and that is what they told her.) it’s not to say that there aren’t kids with a 3.7 weighted who get in because they have excellent extracurriculars or research opportunities, and i also know those with 5.1 who have been rejected (i’m guessing because they wrote a poor essay, or maybe didn’t get strong letters of recommendation).

also, based on your extracurriculars, i think you have a good shot. just make sure to write a good essay and make yourself an impressive applicant, not just an impressive student, and you should be fine (make sure you have strong letters of recommendation, etc.)

(also, my weighted was 4.6 and my unweighted a 3.7, and i got into chapel hill just this year.) you’ll probably be reassured to hear that. =)

Thank you!!! I really appreciate that! but maybe I wasn’t clear in my question, lol, I am in 11th grade haha  but all of this information makes me feel a lot better thank you!
do they really understand that freshman year can be a bit hard to get used to?
