That’s the correct perspective of most of the student body roderick. Don’t stress too much.

Caveat emptor. As has already been pointed out, these are non-existent “stereotypes” - solely the creation of a review site that allows anyone with any motive to post anonymously.

If Northwestern were to be “typed,” it would be that of a Midwestern toned-down More inclusive, More cooperative, Less competitive place than its East Coast counterparts.

As has already been pointed out, President Shapiro has an ear to the student body hard to find elsewhere that won him accolades during his years in charge at Williams. Since arriving at NU, he’s again made sure undergraduate interests are priority 1 on campus.

Entering class stats would place NU solidly in the middle of the Ivy League with many here turning down the usual alternative suspects because of a pretty unique combination of stellar academics, D1 Big 10 athletic spirit, and a great campus connected to but still distinct from a world class city. Absolutely top programs in journalism, engineering, HPME, communications, education, MMSS, ISP, etc. often tip the balance to entice top stars.

You’ll work hard here - just as you would, no more no less, at any world-class, top academic campus.

There are sick-crazy endless options at NU socially. Kids have a great four years here to look back on - both the 1/3 that go Greek and the 2/3 that don’t.

My final word of advice - judge for yourself. Visit. See where you feel you belong.

lol roderick, “Ivy” students typically don’t have dbag personalities. Did you visit and get that impression? I’m sure at least a few among them are dbags but by no means do they dominate. Likewise, there are few dbags at NU though they do exist. The vast majority are nice down-to-earth people.

Also, what exactly is an “Ivy wannabe college”? The Ivy League is made up of a diverse group of schools with varying strengths and rates of selectivity. NU’s acceptance rate might be higher than all Ivys but its stats place it solidly in the middle of that group and its record of winning fellowships has been stronger than many of its Ivy peers. NU’s programs are also strong across the board, in many cases beating that of many Ivys. It has its own unique identity that it’s very proud of. It’s time for this term to be banished. People love labeling Duke, Chicago, Northwestern, Stanford and WashU as “Ivy wannabes” but really, this notion exists only in people’s imaginations.

NU has no more “d-bags” than the Ivies (have experience at both).

As always, experiences will vary, depending on whom one surrounds oneself w/ (my own experiences were plenty positive - people always willing to share notes, covering for you when one opted to skip a class, etc.).

As for the social life - again, can vary wildly and one doesn’t have to go Greek to have a fulfilling social life (my social life didn’t change much going to non-Greek to Greek).

As for the admin, Morty, by all accounts, is an amazing, involved President; however, like pretty much all fairly sized universities, the bureaucracy can be a bit annoying.

I am a current NU student, and I was actually impressed by how much the administration cares about the students- and this is not biased- I personally don’t like the school very much.

Most of the students are nice, but I have to say the ones I’ve met so far seem pretty bland- maybe it’s just because it’s the beginning of freshman year

It is not a bunch of Ivy-rejects. I’ve met plenty of people from all over the country whose first choice was NU and are very excited to be here

Hrrm…

I am a current student… I’ll say a few things.

I think the people do care, definitely. The staff at NU is actually more helpful than any other I have dealt with.

The professors are excellent.

The rigor is what you would expect I suppose, I certainly do not think it is overwhelming.

As some have said, yes there are some dbags…and some of classmates seem a bit stuffy and want to debate the professors in class to show their vasttt knowledge… I am an English major so I am not in that type of mind set. UChicago is more stuffy I am sure…

I do not think it is Ivy rejects…

Don’t really know about the nightlife there, I do my thing in Chicago and take metra to campus, don’t care about football or any of that greek life stuff.

I am thinking about transferring for next fall but it isn’t due to any stereotypes, just personal reasons.
