This is the commonapp essay answering "Name a historical figure, fictional character, or creative work that has influenced you." This is the commapp essay for Villanova in addition to a heavily-personal supplemental essay. I am worried that this is not "collegey" enough because it doesn't really talk about college at all. If you do read it, do you have any suggestions on how to somehow incorporate that into this?

i think you may have the wrong idea about a college essay; college essays are typically NOT about college. they're about you and your character, experiences, hardships, achievements, etc.

I understand that; however, thios essay is about a philosophical change regarding history. It's basically about how 1984 changed my view on history.

well then, it's perfectly fine if it's about you.

colleges don't have specific stock topics they expect students to write about. there's no such thing as a "collegey" essay. there are too many different kinds of people out there. and virtually, everyone will write about disparate things in their own ways.

Orwell's 1984 is great literature. Over the decades, different generations of students have been influenced by its lessons, explicit and implicit, in the context of their times. Now, it is your turn -- to discuss how Orwell's theses about history, politics, society affected you. Seize the opportunity.

Is it alright if I just focused on the history aspect of 1984? I wrote about the power of wide-scale history (In 1984, he who controls history, controls the world). I also wrote about the power of personal history. For example, in 1984, the lives of the children are for all intents and purposes are controlled from the start and as a result they are robots not humans.

So would anybody be willing to read it?
