Counselor Recommendation

Hello. My senior year is starting tomorrow! woohoo!
I heard something about counselor's rec..
if I need this I need to ask my counselor really fast since there are so many students!

So,,,here are my Qs
Do we need recommendation letter from counselor too?
How many do we need from counselors?
is it just like teacher's recommendation?
When should I ask for rec from counselor?
Do all colleges require this?

wow..5Qs in a row..thank you! :)

This depends on colleges to which you will apply so you need to know that before you ask for one. Many colleges do not require any counselor's recommendation. A number require a counselor's recommendation but often it is no more than a form that the counselor fills out which verifies your status at the school, what your courses you are taking senior year, and is sent in with your transcript.

Varies with the college, could be: none, letter, form, letter & form.

1 GC rec

It's usually different as your GC will be addressing things like your participation in HS, difficulty of courses you took, ranking, etc. I would recommend taking a brief resume of your HS activities and interests to your GC when you take them the college forms. This can help them write the rec, particularly since they often don't know students as well as teachers do. Also, your GC will submit a profile of your HS which describes the grading system, courses offered, number of students, etc. You should ask for a copy and make sure that it is accurate (for instance, they may list an Honors Freshman English class that was only offered AFTER you were a freshman, so you want to make sure things like that are noted by your GC).

Depends on if you are doing any early or rolling admissions schools. But, like most things, as soon as possible is best. Your GC will be very busy, so the earliest that you can tell them how many schools, and give them the forms, the better, then they can plan when they will work on your recs.

Most do, but not all.

What many people consider the "counselor recommendation" is part of the form named "Secondary School Report" that goes along with your transcript.

Evaluation Please write whatever you think is important about this student, including a description of academic, extracurricular, and personal characteristics. We welcome a broad-based assessment that will help us to differentiate this student from others. (Feel free to attach an additional sheet or another reference you may have prepared on behalf of this student.)

Your GC should be quite familiar with it, and with the process of sending them in. He/she will send the form with your transcript, and with the school report indicating how GPA is calculated, what courses were available, etc.

Many high schools have procedures in place for requesting these documents. Go to your guidance office and ask.
