Ok so I told my school counselor that I need to drop Color Guard, which is not an academic class or required to graduate. My reasons were that it was affecting my grades (which it is) and that it is too time consuming. I don’t know how else to prove to her that I need to focus on my grades because my first semester grades are not very good. And she can see it on my transcript. She told me she would not let me quit just because “things are getting harder” and that colleges would rather see a few b’s than quitting a sport mid year. BUt like??? I’m pretty sure grades are more important than extracurriculars. I mean shouldn’t a SCHOOL counselor know this? And also, isn’t it supposed to be my decision whether or not I want to drop a class? I mean it’s not academic, I waited until the season was finished, and it’s not required to graduate. So I really don’t understand her logic behind this? Can someone help explain to me what is going on? And what I should do or say to her so that I can quit this class?
Are you sure you don’t need it for a PE credit or required number of credits? Also, you took that spot and maybe someone else wasn’t able to. The school does have an interest in making sure every spot is filled.
But talk to the teacher and ask for help in dropping. The teacher might not want anyone who doesn’t want to be there.
If the season is finished, just exactly how much time will be required for the rest of the year?
Is this a class that you attend every day? If you drop it, where will you go and what will you do in that hour? Is a study hall available, or would you be obligated to fill it with an elective?
And what do your parents think? Maybe you need to bring in a bigger gun, so to speak.
I took color guard for three years and my school only requires two years of PE credit to graduate. Yeah i’m going to just talk to the teacher and see what she can do to help me about it. Thanks!
If you’re a senior, the grades used for admissions are probably either done or almost done. Second semester grades would just need to be no D’s or F’s so be clear of getting rescinded. Honestly, a few Bs in the second semester would be probably be easier than having to explain a dropped class to colleges you already applied to.
But if you’re doing this because you want more free time, thats okay too and I don’t think it would affect you too much.
@happymomof1 Field show season is finished but winter guard is usually the more intense time consuming part of color guard so it would be even more time consuming than it was this semester. Yes it is counted as a class period and if my counselor does let me drop it, I would just have a free period. My parents are fine with it because they care more about my grades than anything else.
Then I don’t see any good reason for your counselor to not let you drop the class. Yes, you should have ECs, but life is also about learning the best balance for yourself. I expect this posture on the part of your counselor is because she believes this is a teachable moment, and she wants you to think carefully about balancing various commitments. Once you make it clear that you have considered them, she probably will yield. If she won’t then you will have to move this further up the food chain. There is no reason to require you to stay in a class that is not a graduation requirement.
