Couple of questions about NEU's mandatory orientation

Since I'm in Honors and the pharmacy program, there are only two available dates for orientation, which are June 25-26, and July 9-10. During those dates, I will be in South Korea, and I cannot make it. I heard that there is an orientation for international students and people who petition for it, on the last week of August.

Could I attend orientation on that day?

Is it true that Honors students can move in a week earlier than other students(So do we move in a week before August 31st)?

I heard that during the orientation, we will meet up with our academic adviser to set up classes and see if we want to change academic classes. If I could come to a later date, will it affect my chance of getting into good classes? If that is the case, is there a way that I can attend orientation on a later date(I return 7/13)?

I heard that for other students not in Pharmacy, there is one on June 18-19, July 2-3, July 30-31, august 6-7, and if I cannot do the last week of August, July 30-31 would work out. If that option is not available, is it possible to email the adviser regarding the classes and go on a later scheduled date?(so I don't need to pay the 50$ additional penalty fee?)

I really do not want to end up in bad classes! :(

It would be perfect if I could email him/her about the classes(if there are cons for going later) and set them up and go to the orientation near the move-in date so I can save additional plane ticket fees.

Also, is there a microwave in the cafeteria, and are there washing machines in dorms?

You need to speak with the orientation office.

In the past, Honors has moved in a week before classes. That’d be August 29th this year, but it could be different.

Yes, a later orientation does affect your classes. Popular electives tend to fill up and you might have less choice in when you have classes (so if you have to take Calc 1 no matter what, you might end up with the worst time slot). Usually this will be fine for classes you HAVE to take, because often the advisors book you in those early in the summer so that everyone is taking classes together. I wouldn’t worry except if you get an elective slot (which you may not, as a pharm student). And in that case, space opens up the first week anyway when people switch out.

Again, you need to talk to the orientation office. The advisors have nothing to do with when you come to campus. All they do is book the classes, since you can’t as a first semester student.

If by cafeteria, you mean dining hall, then yes. People heat up brownies and soup and… stuff, I guess. I don’t think there is one in the dorms (could be wrong), so a lot of students get microfridges in their rooms. Washing machines are in every dorm.

Where is the orientation office? I don’t see the website/phone number for it… :/

And thank you for the quick helpful answers!

Oh wait, nvm. I found their email address. I’ll be asking them now. Thanks again!

Hmm, question. Now say I am waiting to hear back about my scores for 6 AP tests taken this year. Should I schedule an orientation at a date later than when I would get my results back? Since these would ultimately change the classes I will be taking…

Do you have the pre-orientation materials yet? They explain that in those.

No, I’ll be sending in my deposit today.

The idea is that since AP results can come out after more than half the orientations, you should book your classes according to what you’re most likely to get- erroring on the side of too well. So if you’re sure you’ll get a 4 or 5 in Calc AB, then sign up for Calc 2. The advisors will help you as well.
