Couple of questions...

1) How are the athletic facilities at Pomona? Mainly the pools and Rains Center

2) Are there kids who like to go to the beach or go into LA for a weekend trip? And is the Metrolink really that bad?

3) How close socially are the 5 colleges? For instance, if you walk into a CMC dining hall with a Pomona shirt on, would you be singled out and noticed or is it a regular thing?

4) And lastly, are there any good parks nearby where you can run/bike?

I'm visiting the campus in late September, but I really like the school so I want to know a lot about it.

Thanks!

The pools are great-- Pendleton is mostly for recreation; Haldeman (the larger one) is used for sports. Rains Center-- I mostly only used the cardio room recreationally, so I can't comment. Maybe an athlete will post and be able to tell you more.

Yes, weekend trips to LA or various beaches are common. Huntington Beach is a favorite. Also people will sometimes hang out in Pasadena. Metrolink is ok during the day, but trains don't come that frequently, and I think the last train leaves Union Station (in LA) at 9pm, which will obviously cut your evening short. Maybe it's later on weekends, but overall it's not that convenient because LA is not a walking city, so once you get there you STILL may not be anywhere close to where you want to be. The good news is, you will probably be friends with someone who has a car. Definitely, LA and beaches will be accessible. Also mountains and deserts, if you want them!

People wear Pomona shirts in the CMC dining hall all the time. And the Scripps dining hall always has lots of guys in it. People at all 5Cs like to eat at different dining halls for a change of pace, plus there is a lot of cross-registration, so people often find themselves on campuses other than their own. No big deal.

As for parks, I can't think of any large ones, but I never sought them out. I used to go running in the neighborhoods surrounding campus, which are quaint and quiet. Other Pomonans: am I crazy, or are there not really any good bike paths in that area?

Hope that helps.

To add on:

The Rains center has really nice facilities (both for varsity athletes, as well as those not playing a sport)

The last train INTO the city is at 9, but trains going out run until almost midnight, and busses run all night long. I've had pretty good success going in and out of LA at all hours. Metrolink can also be used to get to Long Beach.

Nothing to add really, most people eat on other campuses several times a week.

4.Claremont is a nice village to bike around, and there are a few parks with playgrounds, fountains and the like. If you want to do some low-difficulty mountain biking, Johnson's pasture has a network of trails, as well as more moderate ones higher up.
