Hey everyone this is my first post and I have a question that falls under both “High School Life” and “Summer Programs” but I thought it would be best to post here since it is a personal question and “Summer Programs” seems to be all about specific programs (that I cant get into :D). First here is a little info and my mindset behind it, be warned its long and I use parenthesis a LOT:
Tentative Senior Year Classes:
Ap Calculus AB
Ap Physics C: Mechanics
Ap Computer Science (problem solving and Java)
Ap Government (Have NOT take AP World)
Advanced Engineering course (I guess its an honors course, cant give away title could point to school)
Honors Spanish
Honors English (cant give title as it could possible give away which school I attend, this class is not important to me anyways)
Religion (waste of a credit, mandatory for all 4 years)
Max course load 3 years in a row
So as you can see im a bit behind most of you on this site, although I hope you represent the best and brightest and I am in fact not far behind. As for a bit of personal info I would like to go to a college for Engineering but not sure on flavor of it. I have a ~1850 SAT (NO prep and answered every question to gauge where to study) from beginning of this year and hope I can get it to 2200+ by my final attempt (senior year?), my GPA is ~3.7 unweighted (weighting system at my school doesnt add much anyways) but that is on a 7 pt grading scale, on a 10 pt it goes up to ~3.85 unweighted (a question on that would be do colleges convert grades to 10pt?). I also have not taken any AP courses up to this point as I started off in lower classes (college prep) because of doing badly on the entrance exam, and had to fight my way up to being in the hardest classes. I would like to go to a school like University of Texas: Austin, or possibly the USNA.
On to helping me with my classes and mindset behind it. I am currently taking two math classes at the same time to be able to take calculus next year but my school requires AB before BC and you can not double down, and i understand that most “big boy” colleges want BC. I would like to hear your opinions on taking a Calculus course over the summer to either be able to take BC or if college courses are fast enough go on to AP Stat (no calc 3 at my school). I would probably have to take it at a community college so any advice on how to find the right course for my needs would be a huge help. Onto physics; I would like to do something similar with my Physics class and take a equivalent of C at a community college so I could take Ap Physics C: E&M during my senior year, I dont know if this is possible either but again advice wanted on the subject. The last course I would like advice on is if i should switch out Ap Gov to normal gov making it half year and also drop the engineering course to take either AP Chem or AP Bio. My reasoning behind this is Gov may not help me with engineering colleges and also the engineering course is not well known like a AP Chem would be. I would like to note that I AM taking most of the hardest classes offered, my school just isn’t as fast paced as I have seen elsewhere. For example less than 5% of people make it to AP calc at my school.
If you could give me advice on anything listed here that would be great, I kinda just dumped everything into this page to clear my head. Also if you believe that my time would be better spent at a normal summer program, what should I look for in one, and what would be attainable considering my GPA is not the best.
Thanks for reading if you made it this far, Im off to study for the SAT.
