Hi, I just came back from orientation and I was a little confused on what classes to enroll in. I'm a proposed Computer Science major and I just took the math placement exam today. I'm hoping to get into Math 19A and I know that I need to take my core course as well. I'm unsure though on what to take as my 3rd class. I would have my math class, core class, and I was hoping to get CMP 5J (Intro to Prog. Java) however that class is full. I'm not sure if I should take CMPS 12A/L since it recommends prior programming experience.

Looking at the curriculum chart I got, I could take physics or chem to start out but I'm still not sure what I should take for my 3rd class. Any suggestions?

I think you should take CS5J during Winter quarter because the follow up course CS11 is offered in Spring. I don’t think you should take 12A/L if you have no experience programming, if you do then go ahead~

So for fall, idk I guess you could take Chem or Physics since it is a requirement. That should be fine, or take a GE w/e you want.

Are you a transfer or a freshman? If you’re a freshman, then you should take a GE class. If you’re a transfer, maybe you should look at some future upper-division courses you need to take and enroll in any pre-reqs that you’re missing.

Hey guys, thanks for the answers :D. I decided to take CMPS 10 - Intro to CompSci. So I would be taking my core course, Math 19A, and CMPS 10. And in the winter I’ll try and take CMP 5J. Does that look alright?

I am about the same as you, but i decide to take a chem class just simply because that CMPS 10 only fill up the general education MF which all computer science classes do, also does not give any credit toward major. CMPS 10 is probable a class just to make sure that you are interesting in computer science major

Bauerle I’ve never had him but a lot of my friends have and I’ve heard he is a brilliant professor and I’ve had Berman and he’s a terrible professor
