which class should i take? my dad is saying taking cmps 5J and 11. he says since cmps12A is accelerated dont do it. i cannot find cmps10a.

i cant find cmps10a for the fall semester

It’s not CMPS 10a. It’s just plain “CMPS 10”. Take that fall quarter, then 5J in Winter and 11 in Spring. That’s exactly what I did. I went in knowing only a little bit about programming. 12A is not just accelerated, it expects you to already have some knowledge under your belt.

[CMPS 10: Introduction to Computer Science | Jack Baskin School of Engineering | UC Santa Cruz](http://www.soe.ucsc.edu/courses/course?cmps010)

i cannot find a cmps10 class in the catalog. hopefully they have it. how is computer science though? hard?

Don’t worry, it’s definitely there when I look from the student portal (which I don’t think you can access yet)

Comp Sci is a challenge, but it’s also very rewarding. Worth every moment so far. :)

I found this PDF via Google. I should follow this recommended schedule right?

Just about. I really wouldn’t recommend doing Physics your first quarter unless you KNOW you’re good at it/like it. It’s an intensive class. But yeah, the PDF isn’t lying. Those are good schedules, and just about what I followed my first year.

Oh ok. I’ll probably try for CMPS 5P or something else then. Thanks again! =D

uhh Liesel. i’m an incoming frosh… but i used the search button and i can’t find a CMPS10 class for the fall…

if i cant find it for fall should i take CMPS 5J?

CMPS 10 class is taught fall quarter but it’s full right now. The reason you can’t see it is because you are searching by “Open Classes” and not “All Classes.”

i hope i get the class… i have orientation on the 26th

so i think i might be in trouble. CMPS10 is from 6-7:45pm on TuTh. my core class has a seminar every tuesday from 7-9pm. what do i do???

Hmm now that’s a bummer. You may still be able to handle it though, if the system will let you enroll. Unless the core class lecture has weekly quizzes you can probably skip it (in my experience, the lectures are BS).

Are you in C9/C10? If so, those seminars actually aren’t weekly (more like once every 3 weeks) but they are mandatory. You have to watch a movie/documentary and later write one of your essays based on it. Your lecturer for your core class will also be there and usually you got to turn in a page of notes or sign something to to show you attended. From my understanding, the system will NOT allow you to enroll in any class during this time period and I think they list that somewhere.

ya im in c9/c10. what should i do? just leave cmps10 early whenever i have a seminar? what if i have a test on the same day i got a seminar. this sucks. and i thought they would space out the intro classes and core so it could fit but i guess not -.-

do you think it’ll be harder if i just sign up for CMPS 5J? its intro to programming c/c++ or should i still sign up for CMPS10?

I think you mean CMPS 5C. The letter after the 5 indicates the type of language- 5J is Java, 5C is C/C++, 5P is Python. I think 5C is open for fall. It’ll teach similar material to CMPS 10, but more in depth and less theory. It’s probably a good choice.

I’m pretty sure the system won’t let you enroll in it because of the time conflicts. The best you could do is get someone to override that, but it can be risky if you somehow have a midterm/pop quiz/test during one of the seminar movies.

Everyone who’s a computer science major looking to learn programming for the first time should take 5J, not 5C or 5P.

@SaveTheManatees: 5C or 5P would give a decent intro to programming concepts, but with less stress because it’s a sort of trial-run that won’t count for the major. I know a few people who benefited from doing that before taking 5J/12A.

P.S. 5J isn’t available in fall anyhow.
