At freshman orientation last week, my adviser recommended to me taking only 4 courses for 12 credit hours my 1st semester, fall term, and that is what I registered for. Is this a normal course load for new freshmen, or was I maybe tagged as a borderline student? I was expecting doing 15 credit hours.

It varies between 12 and 15 hours. I heard a recommendation of 12 credit hours a few times at orientation, but I ended up with 15. If you’re comfortable with a bit of school work, or if you’ve had a few AP or DE classes, then you shouldn’t have too much trouble. Taking 12 credit hours isn’t something to be ashamed of, it’s just easier for the transition in to college.

Depends what kind of courses you are taking. If you are just taking the General Education classes than 15. If you are taking classes such as Chemistry or Biology then I’d recommend 12-13 for Fall.

^^Thanks for the input! I’m registered right now for: AMH2097-Race/Ethnicity in US, CGS2060-Computer Fluency, PSB2000-Intro Brain & Behavior, REL3170-Religious Ethics. I don’t think this is too heavy a load, but I am bringing in 31 DE credits that cover most of the general studies requirements, so I’m not worried about getting behind just taking 12 hrs this fall.

What I am concerned about is that I will have to submit my application in February for the limited access major I seek in the Communication College to get in the major fall 2011. I’m worried that completing only 4 courses at FSU by next Feb won’t be much for the dept. to make a decision about me for the upper division college and I may be behind the 8 ball before I barely got started at FSU. My GPA for the DE stuff is maybe 3.3, but it is work that wasn’t done at FSU and getting in the limited access program I am worried could be a problem for me.

You will love Brain and Behavior, are you taking it with Johnson?

What’s to love about Brain and Behavior? I’ve got Johnson. Please fill me in. Thanks

you know, I got the impression from one of the lectures that they were kind of encouraging 12 hour semesters. My son has a schedule with 5 courses but if he passes AP Calculus, he’ll be able to drop one and they didn’t suggest a replacement, just to take less. I think they want the students to get thru first semester with no problems

@wtztu That’s the exact message that they relay at orientation. They seem to genuinely want you to be successful. They require taking 9 credit hours of summer session classes by the time you graduate, but if you have AP/DE credits or something else similar, you’re ahead of the game and shouldn’t worry about taking too many classes. Taking four classes is a great way to “get your feet wet,” and ease in to life at FSU.

If you plan to dual-major, like me, then you’ll have a slightly different (and more vigorous) course load.

Race and Ethnicity is also an excellent class, whether you are with Mikkelson or Robbins. Both are fantastic professors.

I normally hate history, but that class had me interested every lecture. Also the only 8 AM class I’ve ever seen to be nearly filled to capacity each lecture.

I am taking Pre-Calc, Trig, General Chem 1, Latin American History, and Microeconomics…and I am not too worried. You should be fine.

Satscholar, can you please elaborate about Brain and Behavior with Johnson?
