Course Load?

How many classes is the usual number most students take in any given quarter?

Four. Because of the workload and pace, it is plenty!

Are there a lot of chances to take courses outside of your major? I am assuming there are considering NU is on the quarter system but I just figured I would check.

Yep. That's one of the advantages of the quarter system. You get to take so many classes from all different fields. And if you don't like the class, you're only stuck with it for a quarter, not a semester. I'm in the Honors Med Program so I only have 3 years of undergrad here. However, I've been able to plan my schedule so that I can do a bio major, a psych minor, and a music concentration, and STILL have 3 slots left over to take anything I want. It's a good deal.

And if you're a theatre/music person, you often find yourself taking 8! (4 regular classes plus voice, voice seminar, dance, and circus. Yipes! And still I live.)

But yes, most students take 4 a quarter. You can take 3 and still be considered a full-time student (if you get down to 2, you're part-time), and you can squeeze in five "regular" classes if you're trying to cram things in, but it can get intense.
