Course Registration

Hi, I have one question regarding the course registration. When I was exploring the YES Class Search today I found out that number of classes are filled already and some are even to the point of wait listing people. How is that possible when registration window hasn't even begun yet? Are those classes for Non-freshmen? International? I'm confused @.@

Freshman register last for both fall and spring. Registration occurs by seniority - i.e. seniors first, then juniors, etc.

All upperclassmen have already registered for classes (a trying time for us all). Freshmen get last pick in everything. However, if you’re on waitlist you can sometimes ask the professor to manually add you to the class. Otherwise, you’ll have to wait a year/semester.

Can anyone recommend the right Calc to take if I intend to major in Econ?

^also calc 150a or 155a for a possible premed? thank you!

To #4:

I would recommend 155A at bare minimum. I would not recommend 150A/150B only because the standardized nature of the exams seems to throw many students off. However, note that the 155 series is technically more difficult than the 150 series. I would absolutely not recommend 140 because it is too easy.

Although you would likely never use anything learned in 155B in most* undergraduate economics courses, studies show that students who take a second semester of calculus do a whole letter grade better in the intermediate micro/macro theory courses (econ 231, 232). Therefore, I would recommend two semesters of calculus and thus, 155B as well. ([JSTOR: An Error Occurred Setting Your User Cookie](http://www.jstor.org/pss/2117830))

Also note that the intermediate theory courses often require some material learned in multivariate calculus, 175 (namely partial differentiation). While you may briefly go over such material in your economics courses, you won’t spend a whole lot of time on it. You may have to learn/practice on your own to learn such material, although it is not immensely difficult at all. Other economics courses - like 284 - may require some more multivariate calculus and some matrix algebra taught in either 194 or 204.

If you want to go to graduate school in economics, take as much math as possible.

Hope this helps.

*only the most mathematically rigorous undergraduate economics courses might possibly use material from 155B i.e. econ 253, 273, 284, but even such statement is a stretch. Differential calculus is all that is pretty much required for undergraduate economics.

im taking chemistry 102a, and the co-req is 104a. 104a-09 has a class thats not even filled, actually its empty, but is already on the wait list. whats up with that?

I’m technically in VUSE, but since I’ll probably switch to A&S after the first year, I need to take a freshman writing seminar.

I’m wondering if the system will even let me schedule one?
It’s especially nerve-racking because the three seminars I’m interested in are all capped at 5 students.
._.

if you switch into A&S after your freshman year, you dont have to take a freshman writing seminar

“Students must take a First Year Writing Seminar, a 100-level Writing course, and either another 100-level Writing course or a 200-level Writing course or an Oral Communications course.” - [AXLE Writing Requirements](http://as.vanderbilt.edu/academics/axle/writing_requirements.php)

“Writing is the only skill that is privileged in the AXLE curriculum. ALL STUDENTS MUST TAKE AT LEAST 3 WRITING COURSES UNDER AXLE.” -[AXLE | College of Arts and Science | Vanderbilt University](http://as.vanderbilt.edu/academics/axle/placement.php)

Does “ALL STUDENTS” not refer to intra-school transfer students?
or if it does, but it’s still true I don’t have to take a FYWS, would I still need to take a third writing class? I’d rather take a FYWS than an extra 100 or 200 level english class. At least the FYWS’s are interesting.

My D transferred in from another school sophomore year, and the FYWS was waived. It’s possible she may have received credit for writing from a first year seminar class she took at her other school, though (I can’t remember). She got credit from AP for one writing course & she only ended up having to take one single writing course. She took it at 200 level … not sure if that was because she had to or because she could opt to do either 100 or 200. Vandy is really strict on their AXLE writing requirements in terms of how they are met, so it would be a good idea to contact the registrar’s office and ask how it would work for your particular circumstances.

If you have room in your schedule, I would definitely consider a FYWS! A few words of advice regarding that: because you have to have your advisor remove your hold, you should probably call them bright and early. Also, they open up 5 new slots each week until they hit 15 slots (i.e. for 3 weeks). That way, people later in the schedule have the same chance of getting a FYWS. If you must take a writing seminar, I would highly suggest that you take one first semester. The amount of anticipation/nervousness for second semester FYWS is completely not worth it (simply because people know how to register already, so everyone tries to register at the same time and the system shuts down).

And tjb, it’s possible that they are holding that class closed until later, so that later registration dates will have a chance at that lab. Also you need to have a recitation, Chem 106. just making sure.

whats a recitation? i cant find chem 106.

and both of the 2 FYWS that i was willing to take filled up immediately basically, so im stuck as #2 on waitlist for 1 and #6 for another, so most likely im gonna have to pray to click fast next semester

^^ chem 106 is now Discussion part of Chem 102. Vandy suppose to have sent a email to notify everyone about ( your @vandy email).

according to someone in the A&S office, I’m not even allowed to take a FYWS, even with having plans to switch. that’s cool and all.
