My daughter is transferring to private school this fall, for 10th grade. This has led to a tricky dilemma in terms of her foreign language classes. Context: She is aiming for the most selective colleges.

She has earned two HS credits in Spanish, Spanish 1 from 8th grade, Spanish 2 from 9th. Unfortunately, her Spanish 2 didn't even make it to past tense of verbs. Her new school covers preterite and imperfect in their Spanish 2.

She has a choice. She can work hard on Spanish this summer to get ready for Spanish 3 in the fall. Or, she can simply brush up on what little she was taught, and take the new school's Spanish 2. It would be a repeat of the "credit", but it wouldn't actually repeat any of the material.

With the latter, most of what she would see in Spanish 2 would be new to her anyway, and she'd in class with more grade peers (sophomores, rather than juniors, though there's a mix). However, it would probably require some explanation on her college applications, which is unfortunate, but probably not a deal-breaker. [BTW, this would NOT leave her a credit short for HS graduation - she had 2 other HS credits from 8th as well.]

Working most of the summer to prepare for Spanish 3 would be challenging, but she's capable. It would retain that continuity on her transcript, and it gives her a good summer academic challenge. But perhaps it's better to not try and hide the challenges she encountered and make that repeating part of her educational "story".

What do you all think?
