it’s not a good idea to skip Chemistry and go right to AP Bio. It already doesn’t help that you are not flying through bio now, AP is significantly more difficult. You have at least three hurdles in taking AP bio next year. Aside from not having the chemistry and struggling at least some in current bio, you would be taking AP bio earlier that most students. Maybe it would be reasonable to overcome one hurdle with a lot of effort and motivation but there is no reason to do so. You have a great, important science option available(chemistry honors) and lots of time after that to take AP Bio.
I’m not afraid to ask my Biology teacher haha.
So far the only thing I know is that AP Biology is now offered freshmen year.
I’ve found many threads on here from years back to 2015 where many sophomores took AP Biology with no background experience in chemistry and they scored in the 4’s and 5’s, BUT I can’t speak for them since I haven’t taken the class nor I am them.
I’m not trying to debate over this; I know that I am probably going to end up taking chem hon next year.
Remember that some kids here “project” rather than tell what they’re actually doing, and that some of these kids are among the top, top few, who get 96-100 on everything and will score among the top 2% or 1% in the country.
Talk to your teacher. If she thinks it’s a good idea to take AP bio without chem, go ahead but do study chemistry over the summer because the biochem parts are not easy even for students who had chem.
Honestly I wouldn’t even listen to the teacher on this. I don’t see any reason for this student to take AP bio next year. If you end up getting a C and a 2 on the exam, then the teacher may say, ok maybe we shouldn’t encourage sophomores with so-so grades in freshman bio to take AP without even having had chem first, but you are the one who has to live with the consequences.
OP, the other grades you reported are not giving me confidence that you are going to waltz in to AP bio and get a 4 or a 5. Just because some kid on here said they did that, doesn’t mean that they are the same kind of student with the same background.
okay, i completely understand where you are coming from.
Like said above, I am probably not going to take it.
Earlier I said that my school allows students to double up academics, but i do not know how rigorous it would be for AP Bio and chem hon.
This is what I fear will happen but for whatever reason OP seems gung ho on this very bad idea, probably because s/he has no idea what s/he’s getting into.
@apdeprived: we’ve told you that taking APBio on its own after a B in regular Bio and without Honors Chem is a very bad idea. Why would taking AP bio and Honors Chem togther be in any way feasible?
First thing to do tomorrow: talk with your bio teacher. Also, ask if by exception you’d be allowed to take AP Human Geog as a sophomore.
What subject(s) do you have A’s for a semester grade?
The classes that I have A’s in for Semester 1 are English, Art, and Gym. The rest are B’s - on the verge A’s.
One of my daughters friends is older and asked at our school about doubling up AP Bio and AP chem junior year. Our GC strongly advised against that because kids who have tried it have really struggled. I don’t know if it would be the same doubling up honor Chem and AP bio but if it’s a newer possibility at your school, I don’t think I’d want to be the Guinea pig seeing how it works out.
Thanks for your response.
I’m sure it would be a challenge, but I really like to challenge myself and push myself academically because I know I can handle it.
Is AP Biology the hardest AP?
I know AP Biology is a huge leap from where I am at the moment.
Do most people fail the class?
I’ve seen your other thread. It appears you are going to keep asking the same thing with the same info and hope you get a few people to tell you to go for it.
Your course selection, your choice as long as it’s allowed. Good luck, I hope you are successful.
If I were you, I wouldn’t do AP Bio or Honors Geometry or AP Computer Science. I would take a programming or coding elective next year instead and I would take Regular Geometry and Honors Chemistry. At my school, we are required to be successful in a high level of math for Honors Accounting. I would put that off until junior year and do another elective instead, maybe even an easy AP like AP Human or AP Psych, if you think you’re ready.
I opened the second thread to have other people give their opinions, as I still am open to people saying that I shouldn’t take the class (which I completely understand why I shouldn’t)
Thanks for the helpful advice
Alright, I understand where you are coming from, I am not going to take Honors Geometry, unless my teacher suggests that I should.
Unfortunately, my school doesn’t offer any other easier AP’s like you listed.
The AP’s offered for Sophomores are APUSH, AP Euro, AP Bio, AP World History, AP Comp Sci, and AP Music Theory.
The only sequential prerequisite I meet is AP Biology
Maybe wait until junior or senior year for an AP then.
