A friend called asking for help saying that her daughter needs to register for classes for next fall (incoming freshman) and can't figure the website out. Is this correct that you register for classes now without having met with an advisor? I am thinking she is reading something wrong (at least, I hope she is)

Am having the same problem. Here’s what I’ve clipped into my notes:

*** Prior to attending Summer Springboard, you will enroll in your classes based on your printed First-Semester Enrollment Worksheet. Refer to the One Book steps for further instructions and deadlines.

*** It is important that you attend Summer Springboard to meet with your adviser for a group advising session and to finalize your class schedule, including making any necessary changes to your fall class schedule.

*** The major you indicate on the “My Orientation Reservation” step will be your JMU major.

I did find this on the JMU website:

****Who is my advisor?

First-Year Students: Students will receive an email from their advisor one week prior to Enrollment Appointments which is prior to Summer Springboard. The advisor will give students contact information so he or she can be of service during class enrollment. Students will then meet with their advisor at Summer Springboard to confirm class schedules. An advisor may be reassigned without notice to accommodate change of major requests. Students may confirm their current advisor in the “Student Center” of MyMadison.****

So I am thinking that maybe they do register before advising but not sure it is now. How do you find out when this “enrollment appointment” is? I tried calling the registrar’s office and boy are they not helpful!!

That’s helpful. I didn’t see that.

I would add that Cluster One of the General Education requirements (9 credits) must be completed Freshman year.

The majors I’ve reviewed have a sample schedule of classes required and what courses are recommended each semester going from Freshman through Senior year.

Also, the Fall 2013 schedule is now available on-line. I have started building out schedules and alternatives and alternatives to those alternatives.

You might be able to tell, but I’m my daughter’s advisor.

As you know, Freshman year is the most difficult as you register after everyone, so it makes sense to invest more time this year. It will get easier each year.

We haven’t been contacted about the “enrollment appointment” and we have accepted the offer of admission and paid our deposit.

My D is a freshman. Starting May 1, JMU will start mailing out the Onebook, the freshmen handbook that will walk you through requirements that must be completed before you can register for Summer Springboard. You can not register for classes before your summer orientation. You will meet with an advisor during that time and they will register you for your classes during your orientation appointment. Parents do not attend this meeting. Classes do not close for freshman, so you will be able to register for your choice of classes.

Incoming freshman may not yet register for classes. Current JMU students start registering for classes next week.

Incoming freshmen (and transfers) should not be locked out of the classes they need.

One Books will be sent and the procedure for registration will be clearly explained. It is my understanding that freshman registration is being handled slightly differently than in the past, with students filling out the enrollment worksheet for their major and then going on the online system themselves during a specifically scheduled appointment window before meeting with their freshman advisor. I believe the goal is for the student to better learn the registration system and to take more responsibility off the bat for their schedule. Freshmen advisors will be available when students are registering on line… and will further be of assistance in the in person meeting. Parents do not attend the advising meeting.

The registration appointments for incoming freshmen will not be any time soon. It will be after May 1… possibly after June 1… it will be clearly communicated to the student.

Since students have until May 1 to make a decision there is not really anything for incoming freshman to complete (other than making a deposit) prior to then.

This is really not something to worry about :). The One Book is very clear and will walk students through everything.

Sent from my DROID RAZR using CC

“We will begin to mail the One Book and will activate the website in early April 2013 to all students who have paid a deposit.” - Orientation website

KatMT, so is this the first year for the website, or are they just preparing it like they do every year?

“Classes do not close for freshman, so you will be able to register for your choice of classes.” - post #5

I don’t think this can possibly be true, but I hope I’m wrong. Perhaps the Cluster One courses?

Recently they have been sending both the printed copy of the One Book and activating it through an online version.

A freshman may not get the EXACT section time for every class that they would LIKE to take as a first semester freshman… but they will not have trouble getting into a full schedule of classes.

Part of the registration process is for them to learn how to manage the system… looking for classes that will fit in their schedule… swapping sections when and if they come open, etc… the freshman advisor is a great resource for the student helping them navigate the ins and outs so they can take ownership.

The One Book is very clear and the Freshman advisors are helpful. :)

If you have not yet found there here is the link to the page with the freshman enrollment worksheets that the freshman can use as a guide –http://www.jmu.edu/1st-semester/worksheets.shtml

And the OneBook is now live as well – https://www.jmu.edu/onebook/

Does ORL use first come first served?

Have you ever heard of Freshmen getting into Bluestone housing?

Thx.

Just read the One Book. 800 first year students in Bluestone - randomly assigned.

Also from the One Book that answers previous questions:

Beginning May 30th, freshmen will be allowed to view their “enrollment appointment.” This a 48 hour window when they can register for classes using the My Madison website.

As and aside, the on-line version of the One Book is beautiful, unfortunately it’s not easy to move around in it. There are only two zoom levels and I guess I’m getting old, but the higher setting is still tough for me. Forget using Chrome to view it. It would be better in .pdf and even better in HTML. Sorry, I know you guys put a lot of time into it.

Haha! yes… the online version is a little clunky to navigate, but it looks just like the print one (I think they are still sending those in the mail to admitted students). So, it is a nice preview!

Received the One Book yesterday in the mail and logged into the One Book Online System. We wanted to register for the Summer Springboard orientation session but that link online was locked - pending the completion of prerequisite steps. Do you know what prior steps need to be done to unlock this?

Thanks

The way I read it ALL steps listed ahead of that step must be completed before a student can make his or her summer orientation appointment.
