Just wanted some other peoples' opinions on my potential courseload for next year. I am a pre-med hoping to major in EEB, with certificates in neuroscience and possibly finance.

EEB 211 The Biology of Organisms
CHI 103 Intensive Elementary Chinese (Hoping to place through the interview, if not then it'll be CHI 101 and 102)
ECO 100 Intro to Microeconomics
MAT 201 Multivariable Calculus

What are your opinions on MAT 201? I took Calc BC this year, breezed through the class with over 100% (might have had something to do with the fact that my Calc teacher also happens to be my Math Team Coach), and most likely hit 4 or 5 on the AP. Would the class be too tough for a frosh, especially since I want to have a social life and don't want to kill myself this year? I was looking at 201 since I've already done BC, and 201 is a prereq for the Program in Finance.

201 should be okay. They go over some easy stuff (vectors, etc.) in the first couple of weeks, and the pace is definitely manageable. Prepare to spend ~3 hours/week (or less) on book-reading and problem-set-doing, go to all the classes, and hope you're in a good section. If Prof. Kollar's still teaching, try to get his class. He's entertaining and gives bonus marks for spelling his name corrected (with the accents!) on the biweekly quizzes.

Be prepared to despise econ if you're like most people.

Go to all the EEB lectures. There're going to be 4 lectures by Prof. Bonner (assuming it's the same as this year), and the rest by Prof. Gould. Gould is a brilliant lecturer, and has a sense of humour so dry as to approach the sublime (other may disagree with me, but that's just because they have not the wit to see it :)). Don't bother (or buy) the textbook; all your studying is going to be from your lecture notes (Gould makes handy "points to remember" sheets for you to write on in lecture) and the lecture slides, which are accompanied by explanatory paragraphs. Lab is a right pain (they were invariably stupid/boring/revolting), same for the lab write-ups, so remember to bring a friend.

Don't know about Chinese, though I'm assuming you have some background, so that shouldn't be too bad either. I don't know anyone who's died in that class.

Also, you should keep in mind that you might get assigned a fall writing seminar. And what are you doing about your CHM/orgo requirements?

Thanks for your response. Regarding the CHM/Orgo reqs, I visited the HPA website, and they have a few examples of course tracks to follow. I was going by Plan B, which assumes that you have 2 units of AP in Chem and Math, which I hopefully do have (I've got the chem units, dunno about math til this July). Here's a link if you need it.

Chinese will probably be your hardest class. The curve in that class can also be quite difficult.

I recommend branching out and taking a few other classes/freshman seminars. It's fine if you're premed, but it's also recommendable to explore other fields your frosh year.

I would definitely consider dropping microecon for Psych, since that's a field that I would be interested in learning more of. Maybe that or a History class on Asian culture.

Also, mzhang23, how tough is it to get into CHI103? My spoken Mandarin is decent, and I can carry on a conversation, but sometimes, I find myself trying to find the right word or accidentally slipping into English. Also I am basically illiterate, and can neither read nor write more than a dozen or so words.

Ah, I suppose the comment about econ was rather flippant and inadequately decked out with the appropriate :)s and :Ds and what-have-you. It's just that I haven't heard anyone liking that class much.
