How many courses do Bucknell students typically take per semester? Would 6 per semester be doable? Do freshmen get to choose their own schedules?

Thank you in advance!

my daughter is a soph

6 would be tough - classes take less time but you need time to study and grow

Why would you want to do that?

Typically the normal course load is 4 courses. If you wish to take 5, you would have to “overload” and go through a process with your academic advisor and the dean. First semester freshman get assigned a schedule. If they have a major declared, the University will start you off in some introductory courses in your major. If you’re not declared, you are still assigned classes. If you want to change classes as a first semester freshman, you have time during orientation to meet with the registrar and get your schedule sorted out. After your first semester, yes, students make their own schedule and pick their own courses with the help of their academic advisor.

How much of a say do freshmen get in their first semester schedules?

Over the summer, you turn in a list of your top (I think it’s 4 or 5) choices for classes in different categories. For example, what language you would want to take, social science classes, etc. Then they make your schedule for you for the first semester. I think they try pretty hard to make everyone happy - my son got all of his top choices.

He is in Liberal Arts. I’m sure it’s different for majors like Engineering that have a lot of required courses. I think in those majors you don’t have much choice at all.

All students take 4 classes a semester with some engineers taking 5. There are no “half credit” etc type courses really. Perhaps some arts things like choir, but no academic classes.
